Rising Stars: Meet Medschoolboiz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Medschoolboiz. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Right before the start of medical school, our school (Texas A&M School of Medicine) had a retreat in order for students to bond with one another and familiarize ourselves with our incoming class. This experience was awesome and there was definitely genuine comradery amongst most of the medical school class. It was during this retreat and the ensuing days that a few of us really began to hit it off. Some of us had previously been in touch through DM’s and some had even known each other from childhood. On the day of our white coat ceremony, one of us (Aaron Vengalil) orchestrated a fun TikTok. In the TikTok video, Aaron snaps his fingers at a beat drop and a few of us instantly change from suits to white coats. Although it was a simple video done just for the fun of it, it rapidly gained traction and views. Seeing this, Aaron floated the idea of creating a social media presence to document our journey through medical school. Without any expectations, all of us decided to go along for the ride and thought it would be a great outlet for the stressful nature of the medical school. Through spending time with each other, studying together, and vibing with each other on a meaningful level, the friendship amongst a group of 10 of us began to become something special. While effort and thought definitely goes into our social media content, much of its value derives from our comradery and genuine love for each other.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Before we started medical school, many of us were excited but nervous for the journey that was to come. For years, we had heard about the immense hard work and sacrifice that was required of someone pursuing a career in medicine. While we had certain undergraduate and life experiences that gave us perspective about this path, we knew that going through it would be the only way to fully understand what it truly entailed. So far, after a year of medical school, we do find much of this to be true. However, the friendships and memories we have made make it all worth it. Figuring out how to balance school and life has been a challenge, but it’s an ongoing process that we’re gradually improving at. We also feel privileged and grateful to learn about the content we do and are excited for how our medical journey will continue to evolve as the medical school continues. At the end of the day, the Medschoolboiz platform is not meant to tell people what medicine is or should be. We hope to simply show what it can be or could be.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are a group of ten medical students who create social media content via TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Through trendy videos, skits, pre-med advice, and educational content, we have gained an audience of nearly 180K followers across our platforms. As we progress along the medical journey, we hope to show the lifestyle balance, meaningful relationships and fun memories that are possible to have in a journey through medicine.
