Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Hicks.
Hi Megan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started doing hair in 2008 and quickly fell in love with the combination of creativity and human connection the industry offers. I spent about 12 years working at a salon in Houston where I built a loyal clientele and developed my skills behind the chair.
After that, I moved into a small salon suite where I could run my own business and create a more personal experience for my clients. That experience eventually led me to purchase a small neighborhood salon called In The Loop in October 2024.
When I took over ownership, I rebranded it to In The Loop by Lather to reflect the new vision I had for the space. My goal has been to create an alternative, welcoming salon where everyone feels comfortable and at home. Whether someone is a tattooed punk or a conservative soccer mom, I want every client to feel like they belong there.
Today I focus on building a strong team culture, supporting the stylists who work with me, and creating a salon experience that feels elevated, personal, and genuinely welcoming.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. When I bought the salon it had already been open for years and was just called In The Loop. Stepping into an existing business and then slowly reshaping it into something that felt like mine was challenging. I eventually added by Lather as I started putting my own vision into the space and making it feel more personal.
Another challenge has been learning how to run a business while still working behind the chair full time. Suddenly I was responsible for everything — hiring, marketing, finances, inventory — on top of taking care of my clients. There have definitely been moments where it felt overwhelming.
Building the kind of environment I want has also taken time. I really care about creating a place where people feel comfortable and taken care of, both the clients and the stylists who work here. That kind of culture doesn’t happen overnight, but it’s something I’m really proud to keep building.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a hairstylist and salon owner. I’ve been doing hair since 2008 and bought my salon, In The Loop by Lather, in October of 2024. I work behind the chair and also run the business, so my days are a mix of creating hair, mentoring my team, and building a space where both stylists and clients feel comfortable and excited to be there.
I offer a really wide range of services—cuts, color, highlights, balayage, vivid colors, extensions, keratin treatments, and more. I wouldn’t say I specialize in just one thing. What I’m known for is being able to work with lots of different hair types and styles and really listening to what people want so they leave feeling like the best version of themselves.
What I’m most proud of is the environment we’ve created at the salon. It’s a smaller, cozy space where people from all walks of life feel comfortable walking in. The goal has always been to create a place that feels welcoming, relaxed, and a little different from the typical salon experience.
What sets me apart is that I care deeply about both the craft and the people. I’ve spent years building relationships with clients who have trusted me with their hair for a long time, and now I’m also focused on building a team and a salon culture where stylists can grow and actually enjoy where they work.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you don’t have to have everything figured out right away, but you do have to be willing to learn and keep going. Things don’t always go exactly the way you expect, and early on I realized that growth comes from staying curious, asking questions, and learning from experience. Persistence and being open to feedback have helped me improve over time far more than trying to be perfect from the start.
