Rising Stars: Meet Meredith Kirk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Kirk.

Hi Meredith, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My photography journey started about seven years ago, during a series of international travels that led to my desire to capture every amazing landscape I encountered. I’ve always loved how taking photos allowed me to connect with my creative side and freeze any particular moment I want to capture, giving me a link back to the memories and emotions of that time.

For the past several years, my life has been wrapped up in my full-time work as a Krav Maga instructor and pursuing a graduate degree for future work in ministry. I never really considered myself a photographer of people and had never considered the possibility of photography becoming a job. But over time, I kept getting requests to take photos for families, engagements, and I even had a client book me to photograph an elopement in Ireland. I was gradually getting more work, but I was still reluctant to take the plunge to expand beyond taking photos for friends and family.

In 2021 I finally listened to all of the people in my life asking them to take their photos, and I started my business part-time! Admittedly, I initially started Meredith Kirk Photography to help fund my seminary studies. And while that is still a large motivating factor – it certainly isn’t the only one anymore!

God has blessed me with some of the sweetest and most generous clients. And He has led me to build relationships with incredibly talented individuals in the industry that have acted as both mentors and friends. I love how God has used photography to help me serve others while committing those financial gains to serving Him. God has been so good!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
God has opened many doors for me. I haven’t had a vast number of outside challenges along the way. But I would say my biggest obstacle on this journey has been myself!

I struggle with negative self-talk and absurd standards that always make me question whether or not my photos are good enough. The moment I stop thriving is when I listen to those voices and allow all my small mistakes to derail me. In reality, those mistakes are some of the best things that could ever happen to me as they become learning experiences that deepen my knowledge of my craft and allow me to show up for my clients more powerfully. I’ll never be a perfect photographer, but I will always be improving and learning.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in portrait and wedding photography, serving locally around the Greater Houston area and worldwide!

I shoot film, not digital, which is pretty unique in the photography industry! I love the classic and nostalgic esthetic of a film photograph. Something about shooting on film evokes extra emotion and connects me deeper to what is happening in a picture. Additionally, it forces me to slow down, connect with my clients more, and think about every shot!

I’m proud of being able to capture my clients authentically. Hearing something like: “I love how much our photos capture the love and joy we share for each other” is so meaningful to me! I aim to take photos that look natural and genuinely reflect the emotions of my clients.

The combination of film, the evoking of genuine emotion, and my light and airy style produces a photograph that stands the test of time and a finished product my clients are excited to pass down in their families for generations to come.

How do you think about luck?
I do not believe in luck, but I do believe that God has perfectly orchestrated the direction of my life. I’m so grateful to Him for every “good” thing and the seemingly “bad” things that have shaped me into the person I am today in my business and personal life.
