Rising Stars: Meet Michael Heilman Kristin Heilman of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Heilman Kristin Heilman.

Hi Michael Heilman, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Radio Broadcast is a Synth based Live Electronic Duo created in 2008 from the Love of Live Music and Electronic Music. The duo has strong musical influences from the sounds and styles of Crystal Castles, INNERPARTYSYSTEM, Pastel Ghost, You Love Her Coz She’s Dead, and many others. TRB has also been influenced by many world renowned DJs and have adapted to the styles and techniques that have come from the DJ culture. As time and music has advanced and evolved so has the sound of TRB.

The two met at a tattoo shop in Ohio in 2005 and instantly connected over the passion for the “alternative” life style. In 2008 the desire to create their own band had grown from their love of music and their ventures to many shows together. They intended to start their own punk band but neither of them knew how to play guitar nor could they find anybody else as dedicated to the craft as they were. The two dug deep into their roots and resurrected their past musical talents. Kristin grew up playing piano and Michael grew up playing drums. Together they studied the sounds and styles of many of their favorite artists and threw trial and error The Radio Broadcast was born in 2008 and by 2009 they hit the ground running.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As our ideas materialize the biggest challenge is finding the right fit. Having a unique sound and style is great but can be difficult as well. A lot of music out there all conforms and fits nicely in one pocket or the other where as with TRB there aren’t too many other artist to pair up with or artist that continue to play anything that sounds similar. Over the years we have had to get creative when it comes to booking and have performed along side many styles of music such as indie, punk, electro, metal, EDM, goth, darkwave, folk, and reggae.

Finding our sound and finding our audience, as well as our music community had been a big challenge that we have started to overcome.
How to push our music to the “right” crowd, community and scene is a struggle as well. We know there are people that listen to other major artists that are similar to us but finding them, reaching them, and getting in front of them can be a challenge. Over the years we have tried to get involved in different music communities such as, electronic rock communities, DJ communities and most recently the darkwave community.
Venues, promoters, friends, and fans would try to book us for events but had a difficult time finding the right show. Not because or music wasn’t worthy but because they didn’t know who to book us with. Now we have built our selves up and have started to establish a presence to where we are building our music community and growing our fanbase.
I think now fans of our genre of music are looking for more of what we do and looking for the live element that we bring, where as there are a lot of DJs that play music similar to our sound but not many artists bring the live performance.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
