Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Scobey.
Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My wife Carmen and I pastor Vibrant Church in The Woodlands. We love our community and we are thankful for every day we get to make a difference here! But it didn’t start out this wonderful…
2017 was one of the worst years of our lives. We lost our home in Hurricane Harvey as so many others did. We were serving on Pastoral staff at a wonderful church in Beaumont, TX. This tragedy caused us to move away for a season to reflect and really pray about what was next. We really felt called to come back towards The Woodlands and launch a church called Vibrant. We wanted to be a light in the community that would bring hope to the hopeless, community to the broken, and authenticity in a world full of fake.
We moved to the area in November of 2018 and started connecting with people all around the Houston area. In this process of building a team, we met Christians, atheists, and every type of person in between. The common thread that we found was this; People wanted something to live for and people to do it with. This aligned perfectly with the vision Carmen and I have for Vibrant so naturally our team began to grow rather quickly.
We are real people with a real passion to live Vibrant life in Jesus. This is the banner that we have run under from our very first meeting.
Through a divine miracle, we were provided a building that was built out for us at no cost. This allowed us to launch permanently in the community from day 1. Vibrant Church launched strong on September 15, 2019, with a full house in attendance! After launch, our vision continued to be that we would be a light into the community every chance we get. We really feel like our primary purpose of being here is to serve every need of our area, whatever that might be.
The pandemic really tested us in this. 5 months after launching, we were forced to go online only for services. The hardest part was not being able to connect in smaller group settings. Our team worked hard and didn’t back down from the challenge the pandemic brought. Every serve opportunity we could find or meet, we put people together to make it happen. It was incredibly fulfilling to see our people dive in together and rise up to the challenge in an unprecedented situation. Churches had never done this before. A new church plant had certainly not done this before!
Once we started meeting in person again, we have seen our church explode with growth. In the last year, Vibrant Church has more than tripled in attendance with hundreds coming every week. Our team has added services to make room and we are about to start the project of doubling our space to accommodate even more people. Lives are being changed by the authentic community and the Holy Spirit!
We truly believe that people are looking for an authentic experience of community, spiritual freedom, and purpose that goes beyond Sunday. Vibrant Church has been built around that. We are real people with a real passion to live Vibrant life in Jesus.
Thanks for reading this today! Let me ask you a question. Do you know why you’re here on this earth? I can help you find out. Just email michael@vibranthtx.com and let’s get coffee on me!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been the easiest of roads for us. I would say the biggest struggle for Vibrant has been making sure that we keep our vision forefront while in the middle of a pandemic. We are here to serve people using our God given purpose. The circumstances of our culture don’t change the vision, but it can change the mode that the vision is reached.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I”m a people pastor, not a pulpit pastor. I’m truly more interested in helping people live a Vibrant life in Jesus than I am having a full room of people. I think I’m most proud of the fact that the growth of our church has very little to do with my talent, but the God who sent me to serve this amazing city. I’m literally just here to serve people any way I can.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe we’ve been lucky at all. We have been blessed beyond measure with favor from the most high God because we have stuck to the plan that He gave us. Blessing follows obedience and we are living proof of that.
