Rising Stars: Meet Morgan Carter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Carter.

Hi Morgan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I gained an interest in photography in high school, where I got my first camera for Christmas my freshman year. From there, I would go on to take classes such as Yearbook or Photography and soak in as much as I could in and outside the classroom. I’d plan shoots with my friends and take photos of family just to become more familiar with my camera. However, it wasn’t until my freshman year of college where I really began to take my craft seriously and fine tune my skills to determine my style. That first semester, I had a friend ask me to take his graduation photos and from there, my art seemed to flourish. I’d take my camera literally everywhere and just capture people in their elements. I went from being one of the go-to people in terms of taking gradation photos around campus and surrounding areas to directing my own projects and concepts and shooting brands led by my friends or community members.

Photography wasn’t just a hobby to me anymore, but a passion. I was eager to not just take photos, but tell a story through them as well. I wanted to capture it all; the good, the bad, the hidden. And from that, Morg’s Vision was formed.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When people hear you’re a photographer, the first thing they say is ‘Oh, you have it easy! Just point and shoot.’ Yet honestly, it’s far from that. As much as I love what I do, it has not always been a clean-cut journey. The biggest challenge for me comes in the form of depression and doubt. Depression, not in the traditional sense, but as in moments of blankness. Managing periods of being in a creative depression/drought are tough. It’s like knowing you want to create, but not knowing where to start or creating and being so disconnected from your work and not capturing the big picture. Doubt, however, comes in the form of second-guessing to me. For myself, I struggle a lot with giving myself credit and taking time to just take time. Creating is not an easy job, but it’s worth it. With each project I do, I push myself a little harder and I rediscover my “why”.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am photographer specializing in pulling the best out of people and creating something from nothing, with my brand, Morg’s Vision. I love capturing black and brown skin especially. I wouldn’t categorize myself in terms of what I shoot, but I would say my most common projects are portrait based or street and lifestyle centered. If you ask others about my work, they’d probably mention my tones and the overall aesthetic, but for myself, I’m most proud of my eye. My brand name wasn’t chosen because it was catchy, but because it’s true. I love a challenge and being able to take ordinary people and events and bring them to life through new and innovating perspectives is one of them! If there’s anything I’m proud of during my journey, it’s my ability to bring life within my photos. I aim to showcase moments in their entirety; displaying individuality, expression, and emotion, redefining how people view photos.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
As cliché as it sounds, being behind the camera makes me happy. I have really found genuine joy and peace capturing photos over the years. I love curating vibes for my personal shoots, whether it’s through the location, finding outfits, and even setting the right music to maintain energy! I’ve learned that although I’ve shot strangers, I’ve never shot a stranger. I aim to create an atmosphere that’s friendly and welcoming with each person I shoot, so that it feels more like a session with a friend instead of a random person. Seeing the joy from others as they view their photos and just being on-location and witnessing their energy as I’m behind the camera would be the best way to describe my happiness.
