Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathalie Mejia.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi there!
My name is Nathalie, and I am your local North Houston photographer! I live in the Conroe area and am a wife and mother to 4 incredible kids. I attended SHSU “Eat’em up Kats!” and graduated in 2016 with a degree in Communications Studies and minor in Mass Communications.
I began my photography journey in 2018; I had recently had my “rainbow” baby after a difficult loss in 2015. So naturally, I wanted to capture everything about my little boy and all of his milestones. Once I picked up my DSLR camera, I fell in love with the world of photography and haven’t looked back since.
In 2019 I decided to go forward and start my business; my first endeavor on my journey was, of course, what to name/call it? Granted, it didn’t take me too much time to choose the perfect name. The name of my business Madison Faith Photography was chosen in remembrance to my baby girl that we lost in 2015 due to PPROM. I always feel that I get to honor her in every session I do and through my creative process, and it warms my heart knowing that my daughter’s name will live on in a special way close to my heart.
Since starting Madison Faith Photography, I have grown tremendously in the different aspects of photography. I have taken various mentorships and workshops with incredible worldwide known photographers, and my focus is in fine-art portraiture for maternity, newborns, and family. I have learned so much in regards to what my style is and the elements that we work with as photographers in our day-to-day work life. I have met so many amazing families, and I enjoy getting to know my clients and seeing them grow and come back for future sessions.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If I could describe my journey, I’d definitely say it has been a rollercoaster. Lots of ups and downs, learning what works and what doesn’t for me. Starting into newborn and maternity was initially a harder process. I had to gradually build my client closet, props, equipment and, at the same time, be educated on newborn safety and how to make mamas feel empowered and posed so flawlessly and effortlessly.
I have had plenty of discussions with other photographers and have asked for lots of advice to better comprehend and improve my craft. I am very hard on myself, and I always say I am my own biggest critic. I want my clients to have the BEST final product as well as having a memorable experience, and I pride myself in having a very satisfied client base. Having the confidence and pride in what I do is very important to me, and I have strived tremendously to be where I am today.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a portrait photographer that specializes in maternity, newborn, and children photography. I love to create one-of-a-kind experiences that incorporates the fine arts aspect for my clients. Whether that be creating a specific theme for their newborn session or creating a fun design for a cake smash session. I enjoy using different fabric materials on mommas that come in wanting something that can set their photo session apart from their friends and family photos. I love to create a connection with my clients; I will play, laugh and talk to all of my child/younger clients as well as having lots of conversations with all my maternity and newborn families that come in. My hope is to create a special memorable experience that can be talked about on the car ride home, in a year, or even after! I take pride in providing beautiful and quality portraits for my clients and their growing families to cherish forever.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
A valuable lesson I have learned on my journey is to be great at what you do. Investing in education in the craft that you do will always be much more beneficial and rewarding than just purchasing the newest and flashiest equipment. Being knowledgeable in your craft and letting your work speak for itself holds so much volume. I will be prepared to do the work and look forward to being great.
Do not compare yourself to others in the same industry. I am so guilty of this, and I always go so much harder on myself afterwards. Instead, focus on why clients will book with you and what sets you apart from the rest. It is a process, but I enjoy every moment of it.
