Rising Stars: Meet Nelson Valente Aguilar of Austin, Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nelson Valente Aguilar.

Hi Nelson Valente , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Como Las Movies began as a continuation of a former musical project, but with an emphasis on instrumentals where synths and cumbia are in the forefront. Over the last 10 yrs, there has been several iterations of the project of which I am the only original member left. The journey has seen multiple singers and other musicians come and go with me as the chief songwriter, guitarist and keys player. During the pandemic, I found myself without a band as the 2nd iteration of the band decided to move on to other projects. I then decided to end Como Las Movies and pursue DJing. That was cut short when the drummer who had quit the year before, asked if I wanted to do a show in Mexico City as Como Las Movies. My initial response was a big fat NO! I didn’t have a band nor a singer. He suggested I sing and his new band would back me up. I never thought of singing much less as a lead vocalist. I told him I would think about it. After a few weeks of soul searching and conversations with my wife, I decided to bring back Como Las Movies from the dead. To my surprise things picked up rather quickly and we ended up playing several music festivals including ACL in Austin, Texas. We also released an album on TryHard/Spaceflight records along with winning a Sonic Guild Awards grant and got nominated for a music award at the Austin Music Awards. We are currently working on a new album for a fall release,

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
That’s an interesting question. There are million ways to answer but I feel like I’d be going in circles trying to figure what it is that I specialize in or am known for. I don’t feel like I’m doing anything special that distinguishes me from others. I’m just following my muse. For better or for worse I have this passion to create music for myself and with others.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Two pieces of advice I’d like to share: Be kind and be a good listener.
