Rising Stars: Meet Nohemi Sanchez of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nohemi Sanchez.

Hi Nohemi, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
This is my short story on how followed my dream of becoming a musician

I come from Mexican family, we didn’t have everything, but we had enough. My parents always made sure we had something to eat! My dad worked in the US, while my brother, my 3 sisters and my mom lived in Mexico. My parents at one point did live in Houston where I was born, we moved back to Mexico when I was 3 and at age 13 my parents brought us back to Houston because of the better job opportunities, where we’ve lived since. I started playing guitar when I was 10 years old at my local church in Mexico. At age 11, I was hit by a car, and injured my right arm. I thought I would not be able to play any more, because my arm broke and got dislocated, fortunately a year later I was back into playing guitar and joined music class at the school where I performed with with them at a festival. We moved back to Houston Tx where I got into the church choir and school choir! I gained more experience and I then joined a Spanish trio when I was 16. At Age 17, my church pastor made me the youth choir leader and I got to travel to different churches and cities throughout Texas to perform with my church band. At around 20 I left church and music for a while. I would only play and sing at home! I was too busy with work and College, I was trying to make means for my sons. At age 24 around year 2009, I had a few written songs and my goal was to record an album, that’s when I met Moises Zapata, former drummer for power metal band “Magistral” He had a recording studio at that time and I was able to record my first original song with him “Mil Suspiros”. I got a few offers to join a few bands including “Los chicos de Charlie” which is a Cumbia band but I was “not ready” so I decline the offers. In the year 2023, I finally got the offer from Moises Zapata to join his band “Romantica” which the concept of the band was not yet clear, all we knew was that we wanted to play some Rock cover songs that were inclined towards romanticism and of course to start adding to the repertoire my original songs little by little! At this moment This project where we are 4 members in the band great professional musicians! Including, On Drums, my best friend Moises Zapata from Chile, who has been a part of other great bands including Magistral, Gran Andes, and at the moment he’s also a part of Sophie and the classics and “Burn”, Felipe Teixeira one of the best guitar players, I’ve known, he’s from Brazil, he is also the lead guitar for the band “Burn” which is a Tribute band to Deep Purple. Also from Chile, the awesome Francisco Peñaloza on bass! He has also participated in other bands including, the power metal band “Magistral” and he’s also the bass player for “Sophie and the classics” And last but not least, myself, Nohemi Sanchez on vocals and rhythm guitar. I am a rookie one, everyone is very professional and I am learning a lot from the professionals, but I am working very hard to bring our fans and followers a quality band. We play Spanish Rock with a hint of blues and will be adding my originals songs to the show! I also have recorded four of my songs which are available for listeners on social media including Spotify under Nohemi Sanchez: “La Última Canción”, “Segundos”, Me faltas” & the most current one “La Bruja Rockera” which we are presenting on our current shows! There’s a another single that is coming out on July “Matices” which is a ballad. Today, Ai want my band to be known, I want Romantica to make a difference, not only to be heard but to heal someone, to make someone happy, to make someone change their life! If I we can do this I believe we have done something great for humanity! Right now Im performing at different venues with Romantica in Houston Tx. and hopefully in the future we can expand and travel to other cities, states, and who knows, Countries! The sky is the limit! And my hope is to be able to leave a mark on people’s hearts! That’s what is all about! I will continue to create music, perform and make Houston proud with what I do!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road, I believe that nothing good is free, so the road is bumpy but you have to lear to enjoy it! Love everything about it even the hard times! I believe that the hardest part is that I left a long gap in between the time I decided to continue with music but I would not change it. I got to give the quality time to my kids.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a songwriter and a singer! I also play rhythm guitar! I am known for being a good person, a great singer! I write songs in Spanish mostly about life, about members of my family that have a story, some of those stories are about people that are no longer with us, I love to create a memory, a sweet memory for those that stay behind to enjoy! I am proud of having a great band, to have found a great family that understands and enjoys creating something wonderful and that are fighting for the same cause, to be heard and loved for creating something beautiful! I think we are all different! We all deserve to be set apart from each others! We cannot be replaced. We are unique!

How do you think about happiness?
Music and my family make me happy! Music heals, not only the hearts of people, the souls, the world, it can make a kid smile, a wounded person feel less pain, a baby to be cradled, a whole stadium sing and cheer in unison! It makes people happy, is a powerful thing!
