Today we’d like to introduce you to Radha Tamerisa
Hi Radha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into medicine and entrepreneurship began when I joined a practice with two remarkable mentors, Dr. Keith Fernandez and Dr. Andrzej Janecki. Both were seasoned physicians who helped me not only navigate the clinical side of medicine but also instilled in me the importance of compassionate, patient-centered care. Their mentorship was invaluable as I grew as a physician, but my path wasn’t without its challenges—especially as a female in a male-dominated specialty.
Being a woman in this field meant that, from the beginning, I had to prove myself among male colleagues. While my mentors were supportive, there were constant external pressures to demonstrate my competence and leadership in an environment where women were often underrepresented. It required not only clinical excellence but also resilience and confidence in the face of skepticism.
When I joined the practice, I was also managing life at home with three young children, which added another layer of complexity to my journey. The demands of balancing motherhood and a medical career forced me to develop strong time-management skills and prioritize my personal and professional goals.
Eight years ago, I took the leap to start my own practice. My vision was to incorporate integrative lifestyle medicine, nutrition, and clinical research, offering patients a holistic approach that focuses not only on treating disease but on prevention and long-term health.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Aside from the challenges of balancing a demanding medical career with raising children, there were inherent struggles with being a woman in a male-dominated specialty. Early on, I had to work harder to earn the respect of my peers, constantly proving my capabilities and navigating gender biases. Leadership roles, decision-making, and professional recognition often came with additional scrutiny.
Starting my own practice also presented the usual entrepreneurial hurdles—financial management, operational logistics, and finding the right team. Additionally, introducing an integrative and research-driven approach meant carving a niche in an industry that sometimes resists change.
What are your plans for the future?
Looking to the future, I am excited about continuing to expand my practice and its integrative approach. One of my primary goals is to create a GI Center of Excellence. This center would specialize in gastroenterology, providing advanced diagnostics, cutting-edge treatments, and comprehensive care for patients with GI disorders. By combining clinical expertise with innovative research, the center will offer a full range of services, from preventive care to the latest treatment modalities, furthering my commitment to improving patient outcomes and elevating the standard of care in GI health.
In addition to the GI Center of Excellence, I plan to deepen our involvement in clinical research, focusing particularly on nutritional science and preventative care. I’m also exploring the integration of AI-driven tools to enhance patient care and improve accessibility.
Finally, I am passionate about mentoring other physicians—especially women—who are navigating male-dominated specialties or balancing the challenges of running a practice while raising a family. The support I received was crucial to my success, and I aim to pay that forward by helping others find their path in healthcare leadership.
