Today we’d like to introduce you to Romario Accime.
Hi Romario, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always loved hair. I was the kid playing with my cousin’s dolls, giving them makeovers new hairstyles. I mean these ladies were ready for the MET! However, being a boy living in a Caribbean household, my future was to be a doctor, an OB/GYN to be exact.
Fast forward to high school, and my interest in hair was too strong not to start playing around. I started asking some of my friends if they would be my Guinea pig and let me play around and luckily they did! After graduating high school I went off to college and started a little business in my dorm room! It was so cool seeing my work walk around campus.
My years at school, unfortunately, did not end with my walking across the stage, but instead lead me to wanting to follow my passion and take life into my own hands. I enrolled into Toni & Guy hairdressing academy in 2015 and never looked back.
I moved to Houston this past June, with the hopes of networking and meeting new people. My goal is step into the tv/film industry and eventually be asked some of the top stars to do their hair.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth road? Ha, I laugh at the idea of anyone following their dreams and it being a smooth road!
Nothing about this experience has been smooth. I find myself everyday asking what am I doing?! From miserable bosses, to me making my own mistakes and leaving my training period early because I thought I was ready to fly, to moving to across the country because you thought things were going to go one way, and it deciding to veer off the road and over a cliff.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work a lot with extensions and lace wig applications. I’ve always had a passion for extensions but as the hair industry changes wigs have become the hottest thing. My installations always have a flair of naturalness to them. I work with many women with varying degrees of hair loss and their goal is for their wig to not be look like well a wig!
My color work on these extensions or wigs, is what really draws people in. I want for my clients from A-lost celebrities or the average person to all feel like they made of money. There’s nothing that gets me more excited than when my clients tell me they can’t stop getting compliments on their hair!
My proudest moment is taking the leap of faith and moving across the country to chase after my dream. It leads me to working on a set with Keke Palmer and Vogue magazine.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
It’s interesting the hair industry, similar to the fashion industry is all about repeating history but making it appropriate for the modern day person.
Although I don’t see 90s chunky highlights making a comeback or the “Rachel” haircut in its original form. However, I do see myself even adding those elements into the looks I do.
I also believe the gap between Haircare for POC and Haircare for non POC closing. Before you wouldn’t hear the terms balayage or teasylights being used in a predominantly black salon, but now the coloring techniques seen being used by the Tracy Cunninghams of the world, now entering salons that cater to women of color.
