Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarita Dillard.
Hi Sarita, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was inspired by the Black Lives Matter Movement. I wanted my children to understand the context of what was occurring but I did not want them to feel the heaviness or pain that I felt. The book gave me a way to share a child-friendly version of the movement with my children. It allowed me to make sure they understood the importance of self pride, cultural awareness and love for humanity.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall it has. Prior to COVID, I would never have the time to write a children’s book. The pandemic caused the world to pause. In that pause, I was able to fully dedicate myself to the book. It was been a beautiful journey that has had a great impact on so many children.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am actually a full time physician. In my full time job I treat patients for pathologies of the foot and ankle. I have a passion for diabetic patients and limb salvage. I am most proud of the lasting relationships I make with my patients and family. The gratitude they have when they do not lose a limb. It can be life altering for some patients. To be able to help change the trajectory of someone’s life is truly rewarding for me.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Houston is a melting pot. There is something for everyone in this city. I have travelled quite a bit and Houston is a rarity. I love that my children get to experience different types of people, cultures and ways of life. With that said it is also growing much faster than I would like. People gravitate toward Houston because of its diversity however with that are growing pains such as traffic, overcrowded malls and rising house prices.
