Rising Stars: Meet Savannah Garza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Savannah Garza.

Hi Savannah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Savannah Rae and I’m a country singer-songwriter. My parents introduced me to music at a very young age and started taking me to concerts every weekend. I fell in love watching people perform and was extremely intrigued to try it myself. I specifically remember going to an Evanescence concert when I was 11 and recall being completely enamored with the live show. I saw Amy Lee on stage (the lead singer) and turned to my mom and said “That’s what I want to do!” Thankfully, my parents took me very seriously when I expressed such interest in music and they enrolled me in vocal and guitar lessons and the rest was history! I had my first performance at age 12 at a place called Sam’s Burger Joint in San Antonio, TX, and haven’t stopped performing since. I’ve had some amazing opportunities touring intimate and small venues, to performing on main stages like the Texas State Fair (opening for Jason Aldean) and Country Fest. I’ve also had appearances on the American Music Awards and on NBC’s The Voice. I’ve been lucky enough to be a brand ambassador for Boot Barn, Country Outfitter, C Force Water by Chuck Norris, and Miranda Lambert’s clothing line, Idyllwind.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road! Being as young as I was when I started pursuing music, it was very easy for people to take advantage of me. I was a young, impressionable kid just wanting to play on stage and I think many people who I worked with tried to exploit that. Pushing me in directions I didn’t want to go, telling me what type of music I should be playing, what my show should look like, even what I post on social media. Being so naive, I trusted their word as I learned when I was little, “always trust your elders!.” While that may be true, you still always need to trust your gut and stay true to yourself. That will always be my biggest advice for people trying to crack into the music industry for the first time: ALWAYS stay true to yourself, your sound, your music, your goals, and most importantly, your heart.

Even now I go through so many struggles of being an independent female artist. Just a few weeks ago I had a booking agent tell me that she (emphasis on she) would not book me or work with me because I was a girl. No care to listen to my music, no care to see what my live show looks like. I was shot down before I even got through the door just because I was a woman. I didn’t realize some of this stuff was still happening in today’s music industry but unfortunately, it is. Couple many of those instances with all the challenges of being an indie artist, and it’s definitely enough to have an impact on your self-confidence.

However, I have learned that nothing good comes easy and all the missteps and mishaps are eventually going to lead to something greater!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a country-rock singer and songwriter. I am actively touring all over the country and playing everything from small intimate shows, to large festivals and fairs. I am consistently working on new music and trying to hone my craft. I think something that sets me apart is my sound. There are not a whole lot of country-rock females in the industry. I love very organic instrumentation and I believe that every new song of mine has a guitar solo in it. Sonically I am very different and with the addition of singing in Spanish as I often do, it opens up a whole new world in the music industry for me. I have the ability to cater to many different audiences, both English and Spanish speaking alike.

I am most proud of the wins and successes I’ve had thus far in my career as I’m still an independent artist. I have the most wonderful, hard-working, small team centered around me that goes above and beyond to help me. We’re all working 24/7 so any wins, big or small, mean that much more.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Staying true to myself and the music I want to create definitely matters most to me. As I mentioned before, this industry can be very wild and there are so many people wanting to take advantage of young artists. I always want to go the way of my heart and stay 100% honest in all aspects. Authenticity is very important to me so anything I release, you’ll know I stand completely behind it.

Also, any impact on other people means so much to me as well. I truly hope that people can connect and relate to the songs and media that I put out into the world. Everything I write is very personal so if it touches somebody, that means I’m definitely doing something right as a songwriter. It’s for sure one of the most rewarding things.
