Rising Stars: Meet Sergio Trevino of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio Trevino.

Hi Sergio, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Sure! So, a long long time ago at the age of 19, I learned that I was able to write songs, I’d never really tried before. About 6 months, and a breakup later, it was all I wanted to do. I wrote a couple dozen songs, terrible songs by my standards today, but I had strong false sense of confidence, that kept me going and eager to grow. wanting to make each song better than the last. Eventually I started a band with my sisters friends, an in indie-rock project called Buxton, which was active from 2004- 2023, getting signed in 2012 to New West Records (Drive-By Truckers, Kris Kristofferson, Ben Folds) and getting write-ups in Texas Monthly, and New York Times. We spent some years touring the US. Meanwhile, around that time, I started collaborating with Haley Lynch, and Austin Sepulvado on a new project called Ancient Cat Society, which was a folkier, more harmony driven, we eventually got signed to a label called Splice Records, and released our self-titled record in 2017. Simultaneously releasing albums for both bands. In 2017 I began following my dream of making films, my first passion, and made a short film called Frankie in 48, which led to a part-time career of shooting music videos for fellow artist here in Houston, and that career led me to become a photographer, getting photos published in many publications including the Washington Post. This November I released the sophomore Ancient Cat Society album “Lonely Times” which was an album I’ve been working on for 5 years, also I just wrapped up recording on my first solo album that will be released early next year. Ok, that’s about it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Yep! Lots of struggles! There are years where you’re building your sound. In the beginning everyone said I sound like Conor Oberst, which I was a fan of, but didn’t want the comparison. Eventually my sound grew into new sounds styles, even learned to use my voice more dynamically. One anecdote of struggle, was We got asked to go on tour with Los Lonely Boys to Hawaii, and at the tour kick-off show in LA, the singer fell into the orchestra pit, and the tour ended up getting canceled, and never made it to Hawaii.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Besides a musician, I’m a photographer and videographer by day, mostly for the service and hotel industry. I love to learn, I’m not a fast learner, but every new skill feels like a super power. I wish I could fix cars, or just basic car maintenance. As for. music, I’m a songwriter. I can play guitar, I can sing, but songwriting is the thing I’m actually good at. I kinda work in a way where I need to build momentum, once the momentum is built I can write 10 songs in a row. If I get busy with life stuff, I lose momentum, or I lose the desire to express myself. I’m good at writing prolifically…sometimes. Recently, I’ve begun teaching songwriting classes, at a local music school.

What are your plans for the future?
After my solo record that’s getting released in early 2026, I have an album written for a project called Rodeo Art, after that I want to release a cover album, of my good friend, Adam Bricks, and one of my favorite songwriters. And then write maybe another 15 albums, varying in quality and style.
