Rising Stars: Meet Shannon La Vigne of Houston Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon La Vigne

Hi Shannon, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Ive been making art my whole life. I studied Painting and Art Education at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver, Colorado. I was an art teacher for 6 years and found myself wanting to pursue art in a different way. I was, at the time, collecting tattoos and always admired the craft. I thankfully had a friend who encouraged me to seek out an apprenticeship. I completed my apprenticeship at a shop in clear lake and shortly found my home at Houston Heights Tattoo. I really came into my own by being around influential tattooers like Miranda Quinn and Alan Wolfe. My time spent at Houston Heights has pushed me creatively, helped me refine my skills, and find my voice in tattooing.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest challenge was believing that I could make my way off of my artwork. I’m very grateful for having a support system that encouraged me. I’m equally grateful for the community that I found at Houston Heights.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a tattoo artist who specializes in black and grey illustrative and neo traditional. I particularly love tattooing florals, lady heads, ornamental designs, and anything large scale. I enjoy imagery that is beautiful, classic, and will stand the test of time. My mission is to create something in collaboration with my clients that equally looks super dope and custom to their body.

What matters most to you?
I’ve always got my clients happiness and vision in the forefront of my mind. I want to be the kind of artist that works with you, creates something beautiful, and delivers an impactful experience. Tattooing is a lot more than just getting artwork. My absolute favorite part is the bond and energy exchange that comes with it. It’s like literal magic. This is of the utmost importance to me because of the trust, financial investment, blood, sweat, and sometimes tears clients bring to me. I’m always in such awe when a client chooses me to put something permanent on them. It’s so flattering and I take that part so seriously.
