Rising Stars: Meet Sj Knowlton of Memorial

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sj Knowlton

Hi SJ, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I got out of college I worked in marketing because I was a Creative Writing major and I thought I’d like to write for a living. I quickly realized it wasn’t a good fit for me. I wanted to help people and be more of a problem solver. Being a therapist was always something that appealed to me and when I realized it essentially was me listening to other people’s stories and getting to be a part of helping them craft their own I was sold. Now I work with ambitious people, mainly women and LGBTQ folk, who are feeling lost in their own stories and lives and try to help them find empowerment in it.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely leaving my original career path was daunting. It’s scary to think you know what you’re doing and then realize you didn’t. And I worked at the Harris Center, which does great work but is part of a very understaffed and underfunded system. It was hard to work with people who really needed therapy but needed homes and food more. I was also diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes at 28, so I’ve had to learn to live with and take care of a pretty severe disease that’s going to impact me for the rest of my life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor that works with people, usually young professionals, struggling with their emotions who are trying to make sense of their place in life. I aim to empower my clients to trust themselves and to tap into the part of them that is most kind to both themselves and others. I am EMDR certified and work well with anxious folks as well as those dealing with trauma. In particular I’m interested in religious trauma and how that affects people in and out of religion. My clients and I like to find the humor in things and often talk about movies and books. I’m known for my warm, irreverent approach to therapy.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My therapist, because all therapists need a therapist. And all my lovely friends who have supported me, some while being therapists themselves. My family. My cat, Lucy Mew. My team at Nurture and Nature Therapy.
