Today we’d like to introduce you to Summer Stevenson.
Hi Summer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to help people and share my voice. I always danced and loved being in front of the camera. As I grew up, I became involved in pageants. Through competing, I learned to be bold, confident and express myself. When I step on that stage, I feel alive and the feeling is indescribable. I have met some of the most caring and motivational women through pageants. As I matured, my passion for society became more evident. I volunteered in a rural community in Panama and met warmhearted individuals that treated me like family. They taught me to value everything that I had and live every day to the fullest. I have a passion for helping others and seeing everyone thrive. I believe that our unique experiences shape us into the resilient people we are today. One bible verse that resonates with me is Jeremiah 29:11. “For I know the plans for you’, declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. I believe that everyone has a purpose, and I hope to inspire others through sharing my story.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has not been easy. Life has hit me with a few obstacles along the way. Growing up, I always felt different from my peers. I was taller than other girls, had thick curly hair and brown skin. I never quite “fit in.” After years of feeling this way, I embraced my differences and realized that is what makes me unique. I want little girls to know that they are beautiful no matter what. There are over 7 billion people on this Earth, and not one of them is just like you.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an aspiring therapist in the Greater Houston area. I want to focus on treating children with trauma and marriage counseling. In May of 2021, I will graduate with my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I have spent many nights reading and studying, and I can’t wait to start this chapter of my life. I plan on moving to the beautiful New York City when I graduate. It has always been a dream of mine to live and work in the biggest city in our country. I would say that I’m known for my positive approach to life. I tend to look at the glass half full. I believe that my drive and determination sets me apart from others. If I set my mind to it, pray and work hard, I believe that I can achieve anything.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Finding a mentor is key in any industry that you step foot in. I have been blessed to meet successful African-American therapists that have listened to me, given me advice and believed in me. There is power in sharing your story with someone that has walked your path before. Networking is essential, yet can be perceived as a daunting task. I believe that building connections and meeting people in your field is essential for growth. Before Covid-19, I enjoyed attending networking brunches and social functions in the Houston area. I am also a member of the Houston Counseling Association.
