Today we’d like to introduce you to Ted Irving.
Hi Ted, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Graduated from the Dan Rather School of Communications at Sam Houston State University in May of 1992. I worked in Alabama for an advertising agency for about six months, came back to Houston, and then obtained employment with KTRK ABC 13 as a news editor. I’ve worked as a Fox 26 Sports photographer and editor along with contract editor for NBC Houston.
Working with youth turned into a career as I began full-time teaching of film and television at the Jack Yates School of Communications, alma mater of Debbie Allen, Phylicia Rashad, Roland Martin, and the late George Floyd. This led to becoming the director of the Hightower High School Digital Media Academy with adjunct teaching of video production courses with the Houston Community College.
After a few years of full-time college teaching with the Art Institute and freelancing with CBS Max Preps, I was provided another directors position with the Jack Yates School of Communications and Maritime Logistics, resulting in an opportunity to become an executive-level director with the City of Houston over the city cable channel, Houston Television, where I am still working.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road stays smooth. My challenges were getting others to see my story and see my skills as beneficial beyond just the technical and creative, but in the arena of leadership, team building, and culture change.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m known for combining cinematic elements into my broadcast journalism productions and stock footage creations. I’m most proud of the third documentary I produced called “Soul Alley,” which is on Amazon Prime. What sets me apart from others is believing in the possibilities and making things happen. It can be done. No such thing as no.
How do you think about happiness?
Quiet time with myself. This is needed to refresh and renew myself after a week of grinding. I believe in self-care. Wellness is very important along with the quality of life and it is imperative for me to slow down, be quiet, meditate, and rest.
