Today we’d like to introduce you to Timothy Lea.
Hi Timothy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m originally from Melbourne Florida. I moved to Houston in 2015 with an invitation from the late Rev Manson Johnson. I attended Texas Southern University as a music major and started my integration in to the Houston music scene through the Monday Night Jazz Jam at Cafe 4212. Since then, I have graduated and released an album.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Relocation to Houston was no joke. Finding my place in the scene and in the city was not easy. Completing my degree and aspiring to live off my instrument has had its challenges.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a multi-instrumentalist, but I specialize on saxophone. I’m most proud of being in the city and finding my own lane instead of exclusively playing behind singers. I am most proud of releasing an album of arrangements and original music. I think the difference in the music I play is that it may not be defined by one genre.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
For musicians who are starting out, I would say it’s important to go to jams and where the music is being made. It’s almost like being a basketball player. It is very important to make sure you’re putting up shots in the gym. Especially in jazz, there are things you can only learn and know how to do on stage.
