Rising Stars: Meet Vanessa Rojas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Rojas.

Hi Vanessa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello I’m Vanessa, I’m a 29 years old.

I’ve always been an artistic person, I see art in everything around us, photography, buildings, fashion, even balloons! I was born in Monterrey, Mexico. Birthday parties over there are everything, balloons, clowns and lots of unique decorations. My parents couldn’t host birthday parties for me every year, but the ones they were able to, I would take charge of the decor. I remember for one of my parties. I chose a Mickey Mouse theme. I drew Mickey Mouse’s face and with that, I made my invitations and candy boxes by hand with the help of my sisters. We used foam sheets and cardboard. I was eight years old.

After becoming a mother at a young age to a beautiful girl, I would look forward to her birthday parties every year.

I would designs and hand make everything accordingly to the theme. I’m talking invitations, table center decor and candy bags/boxes. At the age of 24, I settled down and became a house wife for three years. As nice as that sounds, it gets boring for a creative mind. I felt like I needed to put my mind to work. I had the idea in my head to start my business in party decor, but I was too afraid to get for it. In 2018, I had another daughter, and after hosting her first birthday celebration, I just had the urge to go for it. My family has seen the passion I put into my daughters’ parties and advised me to go for it. I did a lot of research, watched many videos, and did a lot of practice. I knew I had the ideas and decor part down, but balloon styling isn’t easy. There are so many techniques that go to it. My husband is a big part of my business. He creates any backdrop/prop I design for him. He’s also a very creative and smart person. I knew that with his support, I could do this. If I’m ever stuck on a design, he will help me finish it.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Is it ever a smooth road for any entrepreneur? Haha. No, it definitely hasn’t. I decided to open a business in the party/event industry a few months before the pandemic. The people of Houston couldn’t host any celebrations for months; it was definitely tough time for everyone. I also started with a business partner, which eventually our partnership ended. After being in business for over a year and the industry just picking back up, I had to start everything all over on my own.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an event planner and stylist. I offer backdrops/props rentals and specialize in balloon artistry. I style personal and cooperate events. Right now, I am focusing on commercial styling. I am helping different businesses around the Houston area stand out with my modern balloon arrangements and styles. Balloons have been so popular in past years, and everyone wants a photo with them. It’s great for marketing. Clients take pictures, load them to their social media and tag them. After the pandemic, I think all shops and restaurants out there were struggling to get back and running, and I thought this was a great way to help. I am very proud of where I am today. Looking back to those years where I was always afraid to go for it, I would have never imagined myself doing decorations at a wedding. I definitely feel like I am accomplishing my goals.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
My creativity goes beyond just events and parties. There was a time where I was in between interior design and event styling. Who knows, maybe that’s next on my list. (wink, wink)
