Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasuo Takeuchi.
Hi Yasuo, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am an iron sculptor based in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Working with iron, I create a wide range of pieces spanning from fine art to commercial applications. I incorporate techniques from ironworks into my practice, aiming to share—through the medium of iron—the sense of distance I feel toward the materials encountered in everyday life.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I felt that constantly chasing only what I wanted to create inevitably became a struggle.
When I was 18 or 19, I was always thinking about how I would make a living. Shortly before the competition where I won the runner-up prize, I used to regularly set up a stall at a local park market, displaying iron items like paperweights, small dishes, and coin trays.
Sometimes, local restaurant owners would casually stop by and make a purchase; I remember realizing then just how hard it is to earn money.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Japanese iron sculptor. My work encompasses pieces featuring floral motifs, animal sculptures, and installations integrated into architectural structures.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Many of my iron sculptures are pieces that can be enjoyed through touch.
