Today we’d like to introduce you to Yazmine Jordan.
Hi Yazmine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
So I’ve always had the talent to do hair but never saw me taking it seriously as a career. It started with me doing relatives and my hair then kids from school to locals back home in East Texas (Jacksonville, Tx). It was fun but time-consuming and I wasn’t charging my worth so I quickly got burned out on it. Thank God for growth and SUBSTANCE because once I knew and believed I lacked nothing my talent begin to catch the right people’s eye. I had a trip to Cali in November 2020 and I did some faux locs on myself that had the Passenger to my right asking who did my hair. I told her me from there we discussed linking when we got back to Houston on some hair and business ventures she is a rap artist. So I do her and her friend’s hair back to back a style I’ve never done and it’s giving what it’s supposed to give lol. Yanna then is on full go about me taking hair seriously so she calls her aunt that owns Zayd’s on Almeda like “ you gotta put her in the shop” her aunt sets up a meeting but informs me I’m not the only candidate for the opportunity.
Y’all I just knew “I was the ONE NOT THE TWO !” So now I got something to prove so I work hard perfecting my craft and take a girls trip to Atl while waiting to hear back. I did my hair of course and once again on the plane, I sat by a lady that let someone switch seats. Little did I know she not only loved my work but she had a friend that she had to introduce me to soon as we got off the plane. Tiffanye and I converse about my business and the meaning of it while waiting on this friend to pick her up. YALL it was YANNA’s aunt (the owner of zayd’s) and I had her best friend/ assistant sold on me getting the position. I was hired at Bush airport!
Over the course of one month (4-3-21) I learned, grew and expanded my business ( Substance 11) to Surrounding areas and then Dallas. I left Zayd’s and some of my substance ( the portraits on the back wall I gave to Shawna F.) I then had so much to learn and endure on my journey of Entrepreneurship over the year. I honestly only remember having Faith that if I prayed and God set the table I would valiantly and humbly devour my plate. Safe to say He rewards those who don’t waver from his guidance. I’m now a full time travel stylist with a private but open to the public suite in (level 21 salon in 5th ward) I also have created my own natural retwist gel (No.11) that will be available to purchase 2-22-22.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road but it has been FAITH FILLED and worth it. Some of the struggles I had to endure would included:
• Entrepreneurship
It’s hard not having a blueprint or a mentor or the finances to obtain those things.
• Discipline
You make sure nobody wastes your time but you cut yourself too much slack when you should be just as stiff like “ yea keep that same energy sis!”
•Keeping my eyes on my own paper
Somebody play Kodak tunnel vision lol! But SERIOUSLY social media will make you forget your progress because of how people “post” to be on IG. So I learned to fill my timeline with things that encouraged or taught me better business skills, tips and new techniques.
•Money Management
I repeated to myself daily “you are a money magnet” the whole time I was a cash cow MILKING MYSELF. Like this was my biggest struggle cause I love a good deal on ANYTHING ESPECIALLY FOOD.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
