We recently had the chance to connect with Chris vs. The World and have shared our conversation below.
Chris, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I love this question. For the longest time I believed I was walking my path, but I discovered that I was just wandering. I was a busybody, doing many things at once, but doing nothing. A path leads you to your destination, but I was doubting the path that God laid out for me. “Would it truly lead me to where I wanted to go?” I began making “my own path” , but in all actuality, I was just wandering aimlessly. Since I discovered what it truly meant to walk a path, I have seen success after success. There are times when outside people offer you other steps outside your path, but you must stick to what you need to be true. There is nothing wrong with learning from others, but if it doesn’t align with your path, you must pass it up.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Chris Cade also known as Chris vs. The World. I am a Kingdom rap artist and teacher. I am blessed to be able to use my skills to represent God. I have been in it for 5 years now and my diligence and hard work is truly paying off. I recently began doing Bible studies on social media because I am not just a music artist, but kingdom is a lifestyle. I want people to know that I am truly authentic and my main goal for music is to make people’s lives better. I want them to experience peace, love, joy, but most importantly God. As I go forward I want people to recognize God’s love and that He wants the best for them.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My relationship with God has truly shaped my mindset, my confidence, my path, and much more. Our identity is truly in Christ because before I didn’t know myself or my path. I had all of these ideas, but at the end of the day I felt unfulfilled in them. It wasn’t until I started getting closer to God that I begin to truly shape who I was. I was chasing after my favorite artist or actor, but not taking the time to learn who I was. Now that I know, I have been able to make a much bigger impact and connect with people that share the same vision as me. I am truly building what God has for me.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been MANY times that I wanted to give up. Honestly, there are still times that I want to, but I made the decision that I can’t give up. My purpose has become my life. When I was younger my purpose was just a part of my life. I could give up on it and move it to the back burner anytime I wanted, but I learned that I was stunting my growth. Now that my purpose is my life, I take joy in the things I do. I am much more fulfilled and any times I feel like giving up, I know that I can’t. I think about my life without Kingdom music or kingdom teaching and I know that there’s nothing else I would do.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie from the music industry is that if you have the talent, someone will discover you. I used to think that there were people constantly looking for “talent”, but it is so much bigger. I discovered that they look for someone that has the mindset, “No matter if someone helps me or not, I will get there.” Once you build up in your area meaning building an audience, spreading your music far, building your image, etc. the industry leaders will want to connect with you. There is always a familial connection or a like-minded connection. The “discovered” idea just isn’t true and if somehow they are “discovered” it is rare.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
This a great question! I will say that this is something that I had struggled with, not because I wasn’t willing to put it in the work, but because at times I could be self-conscious. One thing that helped me break out of it was the word “building”. I had to realize that when we see a new gas station, fast food place, tourist attraction, house, or any other building, we realize that it had to be built. I realized that I wanted praise for installing windows, laying the foundation, installing plumbing, etc. but ultimately people look at the completed building. When you truly give your all and complete something, you don’t need praise. Giving your all means that what you are building is good whether others enjoy it or not. When you give your all, you are able to bask in the excellence and keep building bigger buildings. I have learned that I as you continue to build, your true audience will find you. I always say, “you have to be your biggest fan.” When you are your biggest fan, you will always have someone that praises your work.
