We’re looking forward to introducing you to D. Michelle Rice. Check out our conversation below.
D. Michelle , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
When it comes to my cake business, I think one of the biggest misunderstandings is that it’s “just about making cakes.” In reality, it’s so much more than that — it’s about creating experiences and memories. Each cake is designed with intention, whether it’s for a birthday, wedding, or special event. My goal is to bring joy, celebrate milestones, and make people feel seen and celebrated through something that’s both beautiful and delicious. It’s about the emotion and experience behind every creation, not just the cake itself.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey there! I’m D. Michelle, the heart (and hands) behind Curbside Cakes and Treats. I started baking at an early age and as I grew older I was making for family and potlucks I was encouraged to go back to school and against some naysayers are enrolled in the Culinary Institute of LeNotre in 2010.
I graduated in 2012 with a degree in French Baking and Pastry. While in school I taught myself the art of creating tiered cakes with buttercream icing as well as fondant.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I often believed that my worth was tied to how much I could please others or fit into someone else’s expectations. I thought that in order to be “enough,” I had to shrink myself, stay quiet, or follow a path that didn’t truly resonate with me.
Now, I no longer believe that. I’ve learned that my value isn’t determined by anyone else, and that embracing my voice, creativity, and unique perspective is what allows me to thrive—not just in business, but in life. Letting go of that old belief has been freeing and has shaped how I show up for myself and others today.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self: ‘It was never your fault! You are enough! “
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Very much so!
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
Honestly, when I’m out fishing, watching football or just merely in the kitchen cooking!
