Good morning Debra, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
I started Houston Picnic four and a half years ago and I’ve had the opportunity to connect with people during different celebrations of their life. Energy is the most important to me because someone’s energy can impact the energy of everyone in their path. My goal is to provide an uplifting, positive energy that becomes contagious. It can set the tone for the birthday celebration, baby shower, or Diwali party. Event planning can be stressful and so I like to take off as much from my clients plates as possible. Additionally, I have been blessed by the energy of my clients. It shows a lot about someone’s character when they treat people that work for them with a kind energy.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My luxury picnic business provides my clients with an unforgettable experience for their celebrations. We decorate for bridal showers, birthdays, and just because date nights for two. The experience is unique because we show up with rugs, pillows, tables, plates, napkins, and a full table setting of decorations. You just have to show up with your favorite food and your magical picnic experience awaits you. We set up picnics at public parks like Herman Park, City Center or we can go right to your back yard. Our business helps clients enjoy the great outdoors in style.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
My childhood was full of challenges, including financial struggles. As a child I believed I had to make a certain amount of money in order to be happy. As an adult today, I know that happiness does not require large amounts of money. I am surrounded by friends and family that love me and that has brought all the joy I could possibly need in life.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
When I was in college, my mom got cancer, but she was able to beat it and is healthy to this day. At the time of my mom’s cancer diagnosis, our family was divided and busy doing our own things. When we all received news of my mom’s sickness, it brought us together in ways that only a heart wrenching struggle can do. My heart goes out to the families who have lost loved ones to cancer. We were blessed to have my mom recover and that hard time brought my family together as our priorities shifted to focus on the important thing, our time together on this temporary earth.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
A lot of people think my industry is about being flashy and extravagant. It is so much more than that. When you show up to a picnic experience that someone planned for you, it feels like you are being loved in such a special way. When you know someone went out of their way to plan a special picnic, it is a thoughtfulness that energizes the relationship and creates an appreciation beyond words. There is also a calming energy about being in the outdoors, but still simultaneously having our daily comforts such as plates, silverware, and flowers on the table.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
My love for all the humans in my path would still remain. My love language is acts of service and I love to do special things for my friends and family to brighten their day. When I retire, I would love to spend my days bringing baked good to my pickleball group at the YMCA, cooking meals for neighbors who are sick, or decorating for a family member’s celebration or milestone. Acts of love through service is the way I find joy and I hope to remain faithful in that obedience.
