Story & Lesson Highlights with Kathy Thomas

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kathy Thomas. Check out our conversation below.

Kathy , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
The most surprising thing I’ve learned from my customers is how much small details matter. Sometimes what feels minor to me—a follow-up message, remembering their child’s name, or adding a fun twist to a lesson—ends up being what they talk about the most. It showed me that going the extra mile doesn’t always mean something big, it’s often the little personal touches that make the biggest impact.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an extrovert, born and raised in California, and I’ve always considered myself a people champion. I love bringing high energy and excellence into everything I do, while also keeping things laid back and approachable.
I’m the director of Master Minds, where we provide quality enrichment programs for kids and partner with schools and organizations here in Houston. What makes us unique is that we’re not driven by numbers—whether it’s a small group or a large camp, every child gets the same engaging, high-quality experience. For us, it’s about creating meaningful learning moments that inspire kids to grow, connect, and have fun.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship that most shaped how I see myself was actually my marriage – and the divorce that followed. Walking through that season challenged me in ways I didn’t expect, but it also gave me the opportunity to discover strength, do a lot of personal healing, and rely fully on God. It shaped me to be resilient, capable, and worthy of building a life that reflects joy, purpose, and peace.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
“Suffering taught me something success never could — how to start from zero. Going through my divorce was one of the hardest seasons of my life. It forced me to face pain, let go of what I couldn’t control, and choose healing. From that experience, I learned resilience, empathy, and the importance of showing up even when life feels heavy. Those lessons now fuel how I run my business: I bring compassion to people I work with, I see challenges as opportunities to grow, and I never take success for granted. Success gave me confidence, but suffering gave me strength and purpose.”

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire my mother, Blanca Thomas, not for any position of power but for her character. Growing up, she was very strict, but with that came wisdom and a strong moral compass. She listens deeply, speaks with wisdom, and always guides with integrity. I hope to carry myself with the same strength and grace she has shown me.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
Something I will never regret is giving my very best — to my work, my business, and the people I serve. Even if outcomes change, I’ll know I poured in excellence and heart.
