Kim Bruno shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Kim , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I was recently elected by the law school that I attended, Thurgood Marshall School of Law, as a Rising Star in the legal field. The law school holds The Legacy Ball every year in honor of Thurgood Marshall himself. It was a surreal moment to be awarded and recognized as the rising star.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
As a second-generation Mexican American and first-generation attorney, I carry my community’s resilience and aspirations with me into every case I handle. I practice personal injury and immigration law, two areas where people often feel powerless against overwhelming systems. My mission is to change that—one client at a time.
In personal injury cases, I fight tirelessly against big insurance companies to ensure that injured clients receive the compensation and justice they deserve. In immigration matters, I stand with the undocumented, advocating against government forces to keep families together and helping clients find pathways to lawful status.
In both fields, compassion, empathy, and relatability are not just strengths—they’re requirements. I chose this profession because becoming a lawyer was the truest way I could stand up for individuals who often feel unheard or unseen. My work is rooted in the belief that every person deserves a powerful advocate in their corner.
Over the years, after countless victories and life-changing outcomes, my clients began calling me “La Abogada Número Uno.” The name stuck—and eventually became my brand. Today, Abogada Número Uno represents not just my legal work, but my commitment to excellence, justice, and community.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I believed I was only a product of my circumstances. I never imagined I could one day become a successful business owner or entrepreneur. I dreamed of being a businesswoman, but I didn’t think someone like me could truly attain it.
But today, I stand as a product of perseverance, dedication, and resilience. Every step I’ve taken—from overcoming doubt to building my own law firm—has reminded me that our circumstances may shape us, but they do not define our future. I turned my dreams into reality, not just for myself, but to show others in my community that they can too.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Coming from nothing and rarely being heard, I grew up constantly competing with myself—always wanting to do better and be better. As a minority, I felt the weight of society’s biases early on. There were many moments when I knew I didn’t have a voice, no matter how hard I worked or how much potential I showed.
I remember working retail, where I became one of the top sellers. I never missed a shift, I was always on time, and I was dependable whenever they needed me. But when a manager position opened, the higher-ups promoted someone else—someone who hadn’t performed as well and hadn’t been there as long. That moment of being overlooked and underestimated stayed with me.
Those experiences now fuel my passion as an attorney. When I fight for my clients—many of whom have lived through the same injustices—I carry that fire with me. I know what it feels like to be ignored, to be dismissed, and to be denied opportunities you’ve earned. That’s why I advocate fiercely, ensuring my clients are heard, valued, and finally given the fair treatment they deserve.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
You don’t succeed just for yourself. You succeed so others can follow the path you’re carving. Every dismissal, every “no,” every lost opportunity strengthened your resolve to become La Abogada Número Uno. Growing up unheard and overlooked shaped your instinct to champion those who are ignored or dismissed. As a minority, first-gen attorney, and successful entrepreneur, you carry the weight—but also the pride—of showing others what’s possible.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
My faith, a fighter, a heart for justice, compassion born from within and experiences, perseverance, courage, and faith in possibility.
