mahesh mahbubani shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi mahesh, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
the first 90 minutes of my day are giving gratitude for the breath of life and preparing my day to bring in beautiful experiences, a cup of tea in silence with nature followed by meditation
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
hello I am Mahesh Mahbubani the Artistic Director/founder of Naach Houston – Community based Bollywood Dance Theatre. I set up Naach Houston to create a space where people could experience love friendship and teamwork through the power of movement and dance, specifically Bollywood .
Bollywood is a film industry of India based in Mumbai, the city where i was born and raised, and I also worked in Mumbai in the field of advertising, for television commercials to name a few, Absolut Vodka, orbit chewing gum, airtel and Press Ads, a Levis commercial with Miss universe Sushmita Sen, choreographed over 250 music videos some of them are for Alisha Chinai, kailash Kher, Sandeep Chowta, Shubha Mudgal , Sukhbir 7 ila Arun, and acted in the film taal with Miss world Aishwarya Rai bachan
I moved to USA in 2007 and to houston in 2008 and brought my professional experience to the community here, setting the first syllabus based, student centred professional Bollywood dance program. I then set up Moksh Coomunity Arts a non profit organization that promotes local talent and creates collaborations with diverse art forms – music, theatre dance & the Visual arts.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
A lack of trust and respect breaks the bonds between people and what restores them is mutual respect and friendship with a spirit of compassionate cooperation.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering is very subjective , to me suffering is a process of patience with myself, self accepting and embracing everything that life gives me , I underwent spinal surgery in 2019 where i almost died, but God wanted me still here for reasons now known to me, post surgery my body neck down was partially numb and in the 6 weeks in the hospital i learnt the true value of love, care and compassion, which i received from nurses, my doctor who also is my student and all my students, this experience reshaped by perception and my role as a facilitator and my process of healing still teaches me humility that success in the worldly sense could never do that.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
The true version of me is being myself, public & personal , and being proud of every aspect of myself. This is how my parents raised me, I am truly blessed
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
when i am dancing , teaching and creating
