Art & Life with Sandra Duran Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Duran Wilson.

Sandra comes from a family of artists and scientists. She grew up in a world where everything was possible, where she would look through the microscope in her father’s office and then draw what she saw. Sandra’s early years were spent on the border of Mexico where the people, animals, landscape, drama of the religious rituals, and stories of the curanderas shaped her reality. Years later she would return frequently to Mexico and South America to absorb the culture, traditions, and art. Her spirituality combined with her scientific studies has directed her work from realism to abstract mixed media.

She also has synesthesia, which is a crossing of the senses. The senses become mixed and intertwined in the mind of the artist, where sounds appear as colors, numbers sing songs and frequencies dance in her head. She creates work based on certain music, sounds and frequencies. Having earned both degrees in art and in cognitive science the artist has always viewed the world from a multitude of perspectives.

She has been awarded multiple purchase awards from the state of New Mexico and the city of Santa Fe, including the Santa Fe Convention Center. Her work is represented in galleries in the US, Australia and Europe, and is found in many corporate, civic, and educational collections and private collections worldwide.

Her work is influenced by theoretical scientific concepts in physics, biology and chemistry. The pure fun of exploring what paint can do and her natural curiosity keeps the work fresh and lively. Her work is represented in the US and Australia and is found in many corporate, civic, and educational collections and in private collections worldwide.

She experiments, paints, writes and teaches at her studio in Santa Fe, NM, and teaches around the US, Europe and Australia. She is the author of six art technique books and several instructional DVDs.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am an abstract acrylic artist and my work is inspired by science. Time and space are concepts I incorporate into my work. The illusion of time is particularly fascinating. When I investigate space through a telescope I become a time traveler. I am witnessing the light of stars that long ago disappeared, yet, there is the light”. When I am creating in the studio, time is suspended.

Theoretical concepts in physics, chemistry and astronomy also inspire my art. Then, I am then propelled by the nature of the materials. What can I do to manipulate and change the structure and way that I use the acrylics? I have written six books on art techniques and I am always pushing the boundaries, yet I want the work to be beautiful. I want to inspire people to view art with fresh eyes.

The viewer is an integral component in the equation of creating. The best compliment I ever received was from someone that said she didn’t usually like abstract art but she was drawn to mine and it had opened a new world of seeing for her.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
There are more people creating art today than at any time in history. I think this is a wonderful challenge to have. We as artists have so many people to learn from and in so many categories. I view this as a challenge to keep improving on one’s creative talents.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
