Check out Eva Cecilie Hoven’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Cecilie Hoven.

Eva Cecilie, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born in Norway, and I have been living in different countries along the way, including 7 years now in Houston. As an educated medical nurse and a leading member of my national team in squash both as a player and coach I truly love working with people. After getting hard hit of illness during pregnancy I had to give up my work and sport and follow another passion I have; aesthetics and art.

After being an artist for almost 20 years, I am now working on my painting certificate at Glassell school of art, mfah. I’m taking my time doing so, because I find being an active artist in an inspirational and dynamic art society like what sawyer yards is representing, is giving me a better way to develop as an artist.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I have been fortunate to have had the chance to experience different countries social structures by living there over time, which has given me a better understanding of how important it is to have an open mind and help each other. I also believe in having a government that takes care of its people.

Through this experience, I have been inspired to make artwork that tells about what is going on in our society. I have been using mixed media, collage, spray paint, pastel, oil and acrylic paint. I’m working on narratives by using words that I associate with the theme I want to explore. In combination with colors, patterns and symbols, a single word can be very powerful and full of meaning. It can even give a different emotion from one person to another. This is what I search for in my pieces, to tell a story that awakens emotions and creates a dialog.

I have lately been working on 4 larger pieces, finding inspiration in what’s going on around us in society. Challenging subjects in society like homelessness, the veteran’s situation, school shootings and the changes in the political climate in the use have motivated and inspired me to do a series to trying to convey what’s going on outside our front door.

In parallel with my narratives, I have also been experimenting with oil sticks. This I find very intriguing and fulfilling. I’m trying to reflect certain emotions, seasons and happenings in life. the scale of the canvas will vary in size. The inspiration for a series I has worked on has been how life works by constantly giving us more experience to use for our judgements. I’m illustrating this by adding layers of lines and marks that are then almost covered, but still there. I’m trying to show that the experience and knowledge that we collect throughout life will remain in our sub-conscious and will most likely be expressed in our behavior. The behavior is illustrated by a collaboration of marks in different colors on top of all the underlaying lines.

How can artists connect with other artists?
To be a part be a part of the sawyer yards has helped me to connect with another artist and in that way, we learn from each other and help each other. Being active visiting shows and supporting fellow artists is also a good way to connect with other artists.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I am currently having a studio at silver street studio, located at sawyer yards in Houston. My studio is open every second Saturday of the month. In addition, it is arranged spring, summer, fall and holiday seasons events and I can always be contacted directly for an appointment to visit my studio.

Some of my pieces are on view at http://franquizart.com/our-artists-2/eva-hoven. My artwork can also be viewed at evahoven.weebly.com. A newsletter is frequently published where exhibitions and other activity will be posted.
