Today we’d like to introduce you to Dena Simmons.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always been interested in photography and was the one person at every family function, party, or school activity that had a camera with them.
When my daughter was an infant I started scrapbooking and wanted to have really good pictures, and as she grew my desire to take photography grew. After that other people were wanting photos taken and my business has grown into what it is today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wish I could say it has been a smooth road, but it has been a little bumpy for sure. When I started really pursuing photography as a business it was a slow start, I was not confident enough at the time to think it would turn into anything but a hobby. Working a full-time job, which I still do today, being a mom and a wife, and trying to find workshops to attend and any other ways to better my skills can be overwhelming.
I have the best support system in my husband and daughter along with family, friends, and clients. Along the way, I have found my “people” which are other photographers and vendors who support, encourage, and cheer each other on.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a natural light photographer who specializes in Portrait and Wedding Photography. Which includes, Seniors, Family, Headshots/branding, Boudoirs, and Weddings (engagements & bridals). I would say I am best known for photographing seniors and couples. I am most proud of how far I have come with growing my business and getting to capture all the amazing clients.
What sets me apart is the connections that I have with my clients. I have been lucky enough to become friends with so many of my clients and I want each one of them to feel special during their session.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I spent much of my time outside riding bikes and running around the neighborhood with my siblings and cousins. Every summer my mom would make sure we were able to take a small vacation.
After church on Sundays, we would pack a picnic lunch and drive to Washington on Brazos, eat lunch, and spend the afternoon there. I have always been the quiet one and I do not like to be the center of attention. I participated in the drill team, raised, and showed pigs while I was in the FFA.
