Today we’d like to introduce you to Valencia Brown.
Valencia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As long as I can remember, I love creating different things and I felt as though I saw the world differently than other people. I loved when I was in my creative mode, it really made me happy and excited. My creative side had to take a back seat once I got pregnant and life started getting real for me. I hit depression very hard for a good period of time and I lost job after job and it didn’t seem as though life was getting any better.
Then, after years of depression and having my baby girl, I started going to school for my associates in medical billing and coding and boy was it a struggle to complete the degree. Eventually, after long study nights and a lot of crying, I finished it and I thought it was going to be smooth sailing from here on out. I was wrong I still couldn’t find a job in the field and at this time, I was just taking any job that I could.
It wasn’t until 2016 when I got an opportunity to work in the photo department at Sam’s club that my creativity was tapped into a lot more because I had to edit people’s pictures and actually give my advice on how I thought the images could look better. I talked to different photographers and had the chance to see some of the work they did and ask a bunch of questions over cameras and editing software.
I finally started taking pictures and I wasn’t the best but I can remember someone telling me the camera is only the instrument you are the one that has to make the images come to life. So, I tried harder and harder and I was on YouTube mostly every night looking at different videos on how to make my pictures better. I asked my friends to let me take pictures of them and then give me feedback on how they think they should look.
I almost gave up but I changed cameras and it was like everything started to come to life I have only been doing photography for three years and I still have so much more to learn. I always ask my mom, friends, and my boyfriend for opinions and feedback.
I’m still learning and growing but hopefully next year, I will have my own studio space and doing photography full time because I love taking pictures and making memories.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a tough journey because life will try its hardest to just tear you down if you let it. My mental health is what really played a part in my struggle because it was tough each and every day. I would give anyone the same advice don’t let anything or anybody get in the way of your dream. Someone will always tell you that you won’t make it or what you are doing is pointless. You are in charge of your own success and if you can believe it you can achieve it as a wise woman has told me. (I know it sounds corny but it’s true.)

Latisha C Photography is a photography company and I love making people’s memories come to life. I pride myself by doing the most for half the price because I don’t want people to have pictures taken and they stay on flash drives. I go through different companies so I can have blankets made, find different ornaments, make a mini canvas for desk, coffee mugs and much more. I want my clients to leave happy knowing that they received more than what they bargained for.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
The experiences that I had growing up made me want to be more successful and have the opportunity to be able to just attempt things I didn’t do on a regular basis played a major factor in my success.
