Today we’d like to introduce you to Bill Streger.
Bill, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
For the first decade or so of my adult life, things were “good.” Life wasn’t perfect, but it was good.
Things had gone more or less according to plan.
I’d accomplished a lot professionally. I married my high school sweetheart and we had three beautiful kids together.
Everything was going great… until it wasn’t.
In early 2015, a bomb went off in my life – and it changed everything.
Quickly and suddenly, my marriage to the woman I’d been with since I was seventeen came to an end. It felt like it came out of nowhere, but the truth is the cracks in the foundation had been growing for years… until they finally ruptured.
For the last 15 years, I’d worked as a pastor. Since I was a teenager, it was all I’d ever wanted to do. I wanted to help people. But in the church world, I’d lived in, there wasn’t a lot of room for divorced pastors. Just as quickly as my marriage ended, so did my church career.
In the span of less than a week, almost everything that I’d known was gone. The plans I’d made, my dreams for the future, and the things I’d built my life and identity around faded out of view.
It was the darkest, most painful season I’ve ever walked through. And there were days I didn’t know how I was going to make it through. But looking back now, I can honestly say that losing everything was the best thing that ever happened to me.
The life I’d known was over. I felt like I had nothing left to lose, and it enabled me to get really honest. To tell the truth both about myself and to myself about who I was and the kind of life I really wanted. My parents, my friends, and the people closest to me helped me realize that we all get to choose the kind of life we want to build.
I started to think through what I was going to do for my next career. I had a Master’s degree in Theological Studies and 15 years of experience working in church settings… which doesn’t exactly look compelling on a resume for most jobs. But I knew the communication, leadership, and people skills I had worked to master over the years had prepared me for something great – I just had to find the right opportunity.
I explored a lot of different fields, but the one that I kept coming back to was real estate. It gave me the chance to work with a diverse group of people every single day. It allowed me the flexibility to spend time with my kids. Most importantly, I could lay my head on the pillow at night knowing that I’d truly made a difference in people’s lives.
Since I started my real estate career in 2015, I’ve loved every day of the journey. It was scary as hell starting from the ground up and learning a new industry, but the rewards have been amazing. I’ve been able to help a lot of incredible people, and the relationships that I’ve developed with clients have made my life richer and fuller.
There’s something amazing that happens when you let go of fear and choose to embrace the life you really want to build. A few years ago, I met an amazing woman who has become an incredible partner. My relationship with my kids is better than ever. Every day, I’m working to grow into the best version of myself in every area of life.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Using my Move Up Method, I help Houston families upgrade to homes that fit their lifestyle.
Most of my clients find themselves at turning points. They’re standing on the edge of a decision to take a big step into the next season of their lives, and it can feel overwhelming and scary. They’re deciding what they want their future to look like, thinking through what kind of life they want to build for their families.
When I was a pastor, one of my favorite parts of my job was getting to walk with people through some of the most important transitions in their lives. Getting engaged, getting married, having kids, starting new jobs – I got to be there for it all. And now, as a real estate agent, I get to bring that same compassion, care and understanding to all of my clients.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Summers at Astroworld! My parents bought me a season pass, and I would spend several days a week at the theme park – hanging out with friends, riding rides, trying to meet girls. 😉 There was no place quite like it.
Now, as an adult and parent myself, I have two thoughts: First, I REALLY miss Astroworld. I hate that my kids will never get to experience it like I did. Second, I can’t imagine dropping my kids off and leaving them by themselves all day! What were my parents thinking?!
