Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer McBroom.
Jennifer, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2003, I finished nursing school in Houston, TX while raising 2 small children. After 14 years of working as a nurse, I saw the many effects of skin damage caused by over exposure to UV Rays. While working as an oncology nurse, I experienced firsthand the effects of cancer through the patients and their families. I began to wish I had taken better care of my skin. I was always a person who loved the sun, even putting baby oil on my skin hoping to get that perfect summer glow. Little did I know all of the damage to my skin that I was actually doing. As I have become older, the damage has become clear as I developed sun spots, wrinkles, pre-cancerous moles, and never thinking I would have to undergo treatment to correct these issues. I realized that I could be a part of helping women feel beautiful in their own skin without all of the damaging side-effects.
I became excited to the idea that I could be a part of something bigger, seeing women feel more confident and educated in caring for their skin. After endless research, in 2016 I had the opportunity to start my own business. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, I decided to take a huge and very scary risk which has already been rewarding in every way. I have a passion for helping women find their inner beauty and courage to do the things that make them happy and fulfilled. In my business, Jentan, I have had the opportunity to meet amazing people by offering my spray tanning services. My desire is to offer convenience, quality, and comfort to my clients through my mobile services and private studio sessions. Becoming an entrepreneur has inspired me to be more creative and passionate about my dreams and my hope is to share this journey with my clients.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
“The struggle is real” is the first thing that comes to mind!
There are always worries and fears of being unsuccessful while following a dream. Set aside from some of the financial struggles and sacrifices that come along with starting a new business, some of the biggest struggles have been getting people to make the first steps in changing their thoughts on skin care. It’s incredible when you see the reality, that more than 5.4 million skin cancers are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Skin cancer is the most common of all cancer types (American Cancer Society).
When I get a new client I get to see them walk in one way and leave another. This makes all of the struggles and sacrifices worth it.
“Spread love wherever you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” This quote by Mother Teresa encourages me when I feel that “the struggle is real”.
Please tell us about Jentan.
My friends and family call me Jen, so I couldn’t think of a better way to represent my services than as “Jentan”. I am so excited to be offering a better alternative to give clients that “beautiful beach glow” or “radiant color” we all love to see after a day in the sunshine. I believe my method of sunless tanning is the safest way to tan and eliminate the risk of skin damage from harmful UV rays.
We currently provide mobile services where we go to a client’s location of choice or private studio location for a custom spray tan application. Jentan is available for spray tan parties that could involve bridal parties, girls night in before a big night out, groups of friends, athletes, or just spray tan lovers getting together. We use the highest quality products, materials, and techniques to create a customized spray tan to match your skin type and lifestyle serving the Houston and surrounding areas.
I am most proud of the ability to provide a service that is customized to each individual client and I think that is what sets us apart from other tanning methods.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memories involve spending the summer break with my grandparents in the country in Texas. We would go out to their property for the entire summer and it was there where I learned to garden, fish, and live off of the land. I remember the tin roof over the house we would stay in and falling asleep listening to talk radio and sometimes a summer shower that seemed to sing me to sleep. Times seemed to have been much simpler back then. I cherish all of the special moments shared and all that they taught me as it has made me the woman and mother that I have become today.
