Meet June Tejada of Kyrios Insurance in Galveston

Today we’d like to introduce you to June Tejada.

June, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
You can call me the Jack of all trades. That’s because I’ve tried it all, ranging from being a busboy at a bar to buying and selling electronic equipment. When I was just six or seven years old, I sold spiders to some of the kids in my school. Now, if you’re wondering, why spiders? Let me make a long story short. I was born and raised in the mountains of the Philippines where toys were a luxury to us. I didn’t have much, but I had my imagination. I made toys out of sticks and cans. Occasionally, I played with spiders. I’d hunt for spiders and have them fight each other. Now… back to how this all started. I did not grow up with a silver spoon in my mouth or had rich parents.

Ever since I left home, at the age of 17, I started my own journey and life got the best of me. I struggled hard to try to make a living; at some point got evicted from my old apartment. I lost a couple of vehicles because I could not afford to pay them. At this point in my life, I started trying to figure out how can I live a better life. It wasn’t long until I started asking for advice, began meeting people, and asking them for advice. I read self-help books and started applying everything the book advises me to do. I started looking for opportunities and that’s when I started sales. Selling cars, selling perfume and cologne, and even door to door knocking sales. Then, part of me just wasn’t satisfied with any of that. I couldn’t settle for just a job; I just wasn’t wired this way. So, I started my own side gig which was repairing cellphones. Fixing cellphones made more money in one day then working for two weeks at my regular job.

After many more years of struggling, I got the biggest break I’ve been searching for. A friend of mine suggested that we do insurance. So, we decided to get our licenses and started working under his brother’s wing, learning and training as much as I can try to learn the industry and how insurance works. I studied day, night, and attended additional training to learn more. I was eager to learn as much as possible; it wasn’t long until I decided to start my own agency with one of my old buddies from my high school years who was also an insurance agent at the time. Our vision was different from the company we were working for, we had a vision which wasn’t crystal clear at the time, but it was enough to take on how we can take this to a new level, and we wanted to go after it. Jeremy Miranda, my co-founder, from the Marines, and I branched out and created Kyrios Insurance Group.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We know that the first few years of business will not be so smooth. The type of mindset we have now is that of the ant story. If you put a pebble in front of an army of ants, it will either go over it, go around it, or dig a hole under it. If all of that doesn’t work, the ants will eventually start gnawing their way through the pebble. K.I.G will look for ways to make thing happen.

Please tell us about Kyrios Insurance.
Kyrios is a Greek word, which is usually translated as “Leader” or “Teacher.” This word is also mentioned 740 times in the New Testament, usually referring to Jesus. This is a legacy I want to leave behind for generations to come. One day, I believe my son Alexander will take over K.I.G when he’s ready. K.I. G’s logo is the Vergina Sun symbol referring back to Alexander the Great. K.I.G specializes in General Life and Health Insurance, but our main focus at this point is Medicare. We are a state certified and licensed agency appointed with several life and health companies. We mainly focus on long term success rather than short term. We believe more seniors, 5-10 years from now, will want to shop for Medicare online. Our goal is to expand digitally and be on the front lines, but that’s not all. Our mission is to create relationships with the community, partner with new and young entrepreneurs, and help promote them through social media outlets. In addition, by having them on our website, we would drive online traffic to read about them and have access to their contact information. Furthermore, I believe that by networking our communities and showcasing them is what sets us apart from other agencies.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
We’ve all heard the saying that success is the journey, not the destination. Success to me is going through all the trial and errors not just in business but also in life. And the only way it gets better for you is when you become better. Success is not something you can wish for and boom there it is, I believe it’s something you become. Success comes to those who prepare and what I mean by that is, reading those books, listening to those audiobooks, if you get a chance to look at my YouTube history, you will see that it’s all videos of people you can learn from. As I come to a close, knowledge is not power without ACTION. Don’t get stuck behind the education, apply yourself and get things done one goal at a time.
