Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Davis.
Kimberly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been doing beauty makeup for years and one day I talked to a friend in Atlanta and he told me he has seen a lot of my makeup work and I should think about doing makeup for film projects. I started to research how to get started on film projects. I looked up makeup artists, joined facebook film groups and started posting and introducing myself.
I got a call to do makeup for my first film project in Columbia, SC they wanted to also teach me how to do special effects makeup. I started to learn a few things about special effects makeup and I started getting calls for projects in Georgia, NC, SC and Texas. I worked on short films, features and worked on my first sag film last March. I really enjoy working on photo shoots and film projects being creative, meeting new people and seeing the looks on my clients faces when they love their makeup. I hope to be doing this a long time, this is definitely a dream come true.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like any business, money is always a struggle. I had to get a lot of different types of makeup from beauty makeup to special effects makeup. I saved money from every project and slowly built up everything I needed. I have a great makeup kit now, chairs and lighting for my clients as well. One day at a time is how I’ve learned to see things, can’t look too far ahead. Just focus on what is happening that day.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Kimberly Davis Makeup Artist story. Tell us more about the business.
My company is beauty and special effects makeup for photo shoots and film projects. I am mostly known for my special effects makeup, I enjoy the creative part of that style of makeup. I’m very passionate about my work and always making sure the clients are happy with the looks I do for them.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I work really hard at getting my name out there. I network and I am on social media pages like Facebook and Instagram daily. Looking for work and promoting myself. A lot of people I have had the opportunity to work with also recommend me to others looking for makeup artists. So in that way, I feel lucky that people I have worked with like what I do enough to recommend me to others.
