Meet LaWanda Cherry

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaWanda Cherry.

LaWanda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started modeling for Grade A Images in Jackson, MS back in 2015. Jay Cannon, owner of Grade A Images, was in search of ladies who were interested in modeling. I met with him and it went from there. It was a great experience because we were able to be creative and bring ideas to light, plus I was able to work with other models.

In 2016, I was published in Pump Magazine: Volume 63, based out of California. In 2017, I was published in Style Mississippi Magazine based out of Jackson, MS. I signed my first modeling contract with Models on Demand in Mobile, AL. Since then, I have done print modeling, runway shows, and catalog.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No and yes. The no is because I’m plus-size and petite (4’11” and a size 16 dress), and I am limited to certain gigs that have a height requirement, such as runway or catwalk modeling. I personally felt that it was harder to get noticed by modeling agencies. However, I have done some runway shows that did not have a height requirement. Being petite I’m able to do print modeling, commercial, and catalog.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a plus-size petite model. I specialize in and known for print modeling and catalog. I am proud of my accomplishments and how far I have come. A small town girl from Moss Point, MS following her dreams. I am proud of the opportunities that I’ve had and proud to have worked with the people I’ve worked with. If I would have given up, I would not be where I am today.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My future plans are to work with aspiring models who are petite and plus-size just like me to build a modeling portfolio. There are a lot of ladies that feel that because they do not meet the height requirements of a runway model, they are not capable of becoming a model. I want to help others and direct them on the right path of their modeling career.

I also hope to work with other photographers and models in the future and travel the world.
