Rising Stars: Meet Marilyn Anguiano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marilyn Anguiano.

Hi Marilyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved photography, animals, grooming and overall holistic health care for animals, so I thought why not form it into a business!

I never once saw my work as a job; it’s something I’ve always enjoyed doing since a kid. As a kid, I would knock on people’s doors to ask if I could groom their dogs. My friends, family and even neighbors would come to me for help if there was a sick animal. They knew I would be the one to nurture it back to life!

Unkept Pups has grown a lot and it’s super flattering that other pet parents look up to me and willingly want the best for their pets. We are working on becoming a small, nonprofit animal rescue for horses, small dogs and puppies/kittens in need!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely was not smooth to start. I don’t think any small business is! I officially wanted to start my own grooming business in January 2020 and shortly after investing into products, COVID happened. I didn’t want to give up and not try. I was working part-time at H‑E‑B and working at a grocery store during the pandemic was not easy.. but it made me want to get out and do my own thing even harder.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize myself as a luxury, holistic professional dog groomer! I also have a pet bakery, dog boarding and professional dog photography included in my business. I’m most proud of being able to change the game in the grooming community. I want people to know that their dogs are not stuffed in cages most of the day and they can actually enjoy a real spa day all to themselves. No other dogs anxiously waiting around; it’s just me and that one dog scheduled for the day.

How do you think about happiness?
It makes me happy to know I’m able to gain a dog’s trust, especially after being told I wouldn’t be able to groom the dog because of its attitude. I believe energy speaks volumes! It’s not to say I can groom every dog that has issues; some just work better in certain environments! You as the pet parent just has to find what works best for that dog and I, as the professional, must never push a dog to its limits. Patience is key!
