Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Davis.
Alexis, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
After graduating from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I just knew I would have the perfect job working in social media, communications, and/or public relations. I will admit that I was a little stubborn during my last year in college as I only applied to opportunities in the Washington D.C. area. I wanted to be in the nation’s capital because I knew there was something special about the city that I just had to explore. I was able to find a full-time internship at a content marketing agency a few months after graduating, and there, I learned a lot about social media, content, analytics, and branding.
Soon after, I pitched a social media internship to a transportation startup and began working with them. Working for a startup taught me how to think quickly on my feet, never stop learning, and to fail fast but then move on. I learned a lot about crafting a social media strategy and how to develop a company’s brand from scratch. Working at the startup also set me up for success because I was in a situation where we literally had to start from the bottom and work to achieve a massive goal each day, or we simply wouldn’t make it.
I then brought my startup skills with me to my corporate role in Austin. With my nine-to-five, I challenge my peers and supervisors to think differently about social media and marketing and not stick with what has been done in our industry over the last couple of decades.
The Content Plug came about due to my need to stay creative, combined with my goal of helping small businesses obtain the resources and tools they need to succeed. I meet so many business owners who simply want to know how to market their business and get the word out, but they do not know where to start since social media can be confusing to some and because it changes so often.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
As a social media manager, I create social strategies, manage accounts for brands, consult with businesses, and teach workshops/classes. Ultimately, my “art” can be seen in the content that I create and curate.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
Social media has changed drastically due to algorithms, fake news/news that is actually opinion based, outlets wanting to be first with announcements and not caring if they are correct or not, trolls, and data issues. Add in trying to cut through the constant noise, a lack of funding, and mental health/comparison issues, and you can easily see why so many people choose not to deal with the stress and pressures of the platforms.
However, I can see the positives in social media for education, comedy, news, marketing, and other purposes. My apps are the first places I go when I want to hear the thoughts and opinions of real people and engage in dialogue that I cannot get anywhere else. My hope is that others can one day use these tools to truly be constructive.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My social media teachings can be seen in many different places. For one, my blog (thecontentplug.co/blog) is a hub for my long-form thoughts on social media marketing. I also share weekly tips related to social networking via my #SocialTipSunday series on my personal Instagram (instagram.com/yeahitslex) and via The Content Plug’s Instagram (instagram.com/thecontentplug)
I also provide a lot of knowledge through events where I speak and teach. Learn more about my upcoming events via thecontentplug.co/events.
