Today we’d like to introduce you to Nine Lam and Dee Dee Watters.
Nine and Dee Dee, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Kinship Care Education was started in 2017. As part of the transgender community, our founders saw that there was a lack of service to transgender individuals and the lack of accessibility to the proper resources to help with their transition. For this reason, we took the initiative into our own hands with a mission to educate and provide assistance to navigate accessibility to insurance for better health and life for members of the community.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As members of the transgender communities, our long time personal experiences led us to get to be where we are to have the resources and knowledge. Our journey was a rough one; we both lost our mothers within the beginning stages of starting Kinship Care.
Please tell us about Kinship Care Education.
We serve the Trans Community first by assistance and connecting with the proper Trans Care providers, as well as other resources for their transitions journey. Kinship Care Education also provides free enrollment assistance in Medicare Plans, Market Plans (Affordable Care Act), Supplements, Dental, Vision, Private Health Insurance, Group Benefits, Long Term Care, Life Insurance, and Final Expense.
What were you like growing up?
Each of us came from a very different background. Nine, pronouns He/Him, was an immigrant from Vietnam and came over with his mother and father. Dee Dee, pronouns She/Her, is a native Houstonian. Her transition journey started at a very young age and had a life-threatening illness that almost took her life away before she could graduate from high school.
