Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Lola.
Hi Joy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been a lover of music and fashion. However, during my years as an undergrad, I developed a huge passion for both. I started first with music by being a part of a Background vocalist group called Jem. Although music has always been a part of me, I grew up singing in church as well as being in a girl music group during my middles school days. Fast forward, years later, I found myself going around doing BV for famous African artists who needed our services. From there on, everything else with music came and I seized each opportunity as they came. It was a great way for a college student like myself to make quick bucks while also networking. Fashion was bound to come in. It was only a matter of time. After discovering my style, I grew a carefree attitude. I dress how I feel, and I love being different. I love putting together the ugliest of things and combining them to create an artistic blend. Today I travel to different states to work with different models, photographers and videographers. I still have a long way to go, however within the time span I have dedicated my time to do these creative ideas, I have seen immense growth and I couldn’t be more grateful for all the accomplishments. Being a freelance model isn’t easy at all, but you learn and grow from all the experiences.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been easy at all; there have been lots of sleepless nights, cries, and rejection. All these experiences, however, has made me strong in my beliefs. The hugest Challenge I experienced along the way has been opening up to my family about my career choice. I grew up in an African religious home, convincing my parents didn’t go as planned, especially when they have another agenda in mind panned out for you. I’ve been threatened to be kicked out many times, but I do not let that discourage me. I use it as fuel to light up the ignition, to keep pushing, for I know there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. My focus and drive have shown more than I could have ever explained. My journey is just beginning.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am Joylola. I am a freelance model. I am known to model. Only a few people know me for my music. I have worked with different artists and made appearances in some music videos. I have also worked with different private brands to help showcase their apparel, accessories, skincare, etc. I am most proud of being able to travel around the United States, living my dream life while doing what I love. My drive sets me apart from others. I’ve been through many life circumstances, but each time I come back ten times better. I see the positives in all negatives and I smile through all that life may throw. I will always keep pushing, and I don’t plan to stop until I get to where I want to and when I get there, I plan to help others in living their dream life as well because I now know anything you imagine is attainable. I also understand the fun is in the journey and not just the destination, so I’ll keep enjoying the ride.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was back in Nigeria. Growing up, I was the only girl out of five. I remember late nights in my backyard with my brothers and cousins. We would create a campfire and compose different songs while my big cousin would play his guitar. I hold those memories so dear because it was the start of a loving relationship between music and me. Those moments were so pivotal. Although I didn’t find my voice yet, I understood the lyrics of the songs. I loved the rhythm and the Joy in my heart after every backyard session. It connected my family.
