A Best Friend With Real‑Life Roots and Big‑Screen Heart

In Gypsy in the Quarter, now streaming on TubiMiss Malik brings lived experience and natural charisma to the role of Marisol, the main character’s outspoken best friend. Drawn to the part through a casting call that mirrored her own extroverted energy and legal‑world background, Malik grounded the performance in authenticity—treating the role as an extension of real life. Filmed across New Orleans and Houston, the project reflects both cultural heritage and urban diversity, earning praise from audiences for its strong performances and polished production. Looking ahead, Malik is eager to lean into comedy—especially Spanish‑language roles—continuing to explore stories that feel both personal and playful.

Miss Malik, you’re part of the film Gypsy in the Quarter, now streaming on Tubi—how did you first get involved with the project, and what drew you to the role of the main character’s best friend?
I saw the casting call online, and thought the role of Marisol would be a great fit, because of the character’s extroverted personality (similar to my own), as well as her paralegal/social influencer career, mirroring my actual 9 to 5 as a legal assistant.

The film was shot in both Houston and New Orleans with a local cast. What was it like working across those two cities, and how did the locations influence the energy of the production?
Filming in New Orleans authenticated the role, because so much of her friendship with the main character revolved around her heritage deriving from New Orleans. Filming in Houston was surreal, because our city’s diversity deserves more recognition in film, and it was reflected through this project.

How did you approach bringing depth and authenticity to a supporting role that’s closely tied to the main character’s journey?
I treated the role as my actual life. I emphasized my extroverted nature when acting out the scenes.

What has the response been like since the film became available to a wider audience on streaming?
The audience has complimented the quality of the picture and editing, as well as our acting skills.

After this project, what kinds of roles or stories are you most excited to explore next as an actor?
I’d like to take on comedic roles, particularly in Spanish.
