Art & Life with Nicole J. Nikas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole J. Nikas.

Nicole, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Personal expression through creating has always been evident in my life. Once I experienced a technology-based class in middle school, using both a camcorder and digital camera, I was enraptured with curiosity at the possibilities digital media brought to light. Still very much fond of the traditional arts in drawing and painting, I set my main focus on digital photography as I grew. Luckily in college, I was exposed to all types of art as I pursued my degree in photographic fine arts and intermedia arts. Whether I experimented with oil painting, makeup artistry, sculpture creating, or projection-based art, every skill earned along the way was only helping my vision as a photographer. My curiosity for learning, artistic attention to detail, and pure passion for the arts compels my work to go further with each new piece or project created.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My tendency to creatively process concepts and respond to events through the creation of art is what has guided my artistic endeavors throughout life. My mentality is what drives my creativity. I have always internalized the majority of my thoughts and emotions, creating a racing stream of consciousness in the landscape of my mind. This stream of consciousness is only quelled by expression through a multitude of media.
Namely, photography is the summation of much of my artistic interests: makeup artistry, clothing & accessory crafting, lighting techniques, painterly tendencies, and creative storytelling all play a part in my photographic art style. Erring on the side of the more conceptual and impactful, I enjoy making photography that stands out through its point of view, use of subject, and emotion conveyed. Planned and spontaneous creations alike capture a single instance of awe within my work, daring viewers to peer and ponder.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Whether or not someone else has found his or her vision does not matter. What is key to a true artist’s own development, and a word of advice a younger me could have used, is allowing yourself the time, resources, and will power to find your personal perspective or vision for how you want your art to be expressed. Be engulfed by a multitude of inspirations, flood your mind with knowledge and history of things that both interest you and that which may seem completely new to you, and keep creating. Create large. Create small. Create successfully. Create mistakenly. But never stop artistically enriching and expressing yourself, because that is truly how you keep growing as an artistic person.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
