Meet BJ Soname of Dee’s Desserts and Sweets (Borderlinesinful)

Today we’d like to introduce you to BJ Soname.

BJ, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I had a co-worker who always stopped at Starbucks everyday to get a cake pops, so I convinced that I could supply her a dozen cake pops every week. From there I started getting orders from other coworkers.

Mother’s day 2011, I decided to drum up more business by promoting a special on treats. I sent a text message to all my friends (especially the guys, because I knew they probably hadn’t thought about what to get the special ladies in their lives). That weekend was a hit, and it snowballed from there.

Within a short period of time, I started receiving inquiries for cakes. I loved to bake, made yummy cakes but couldn’t decorate a cake to save my life! I turned down those inquiries and focused on the cake pops and cupcakes that I knew how to do. The more I turned them down, the more inquiries came. Then, I had a light bulb moment! Why not learn how to decorate!!?

I got online and researched how to make crusting buttercream, how to work with fondant, and I pretty much bought all the baking tools Michaels had to offer.

Eight years later and I am elbow deep in buttercream and still learning and loving it!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Gosh! It hasn’t been a cakewalk (see what I did there?). I have had meltdowns! I quit every week. And I have a designated crying spot in my kitchen. It is not an easy task of turning a hobby into a business. Creativity and business savvy are two completely different entities. I had to learn about pricing, time management, and marketing.

Most importantly, I had to figure out how to implement over 15 years of customer service skills into my own business. A great product is nothing without repeat business and referrals. I also had a full-time job and juggling both was very tasking.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Dee’s Desserts and Sweets (Borderlinesinful) – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
