An Inspired Chat with Ablyss Gillespie of Houston

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Ablyss Gillespie . Check out our conversation below.

Hi Ablyss , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
First 90 minutes involve making both beds in the morning, applying my face cream, shower, getting my daughter ready for the day, stretching and cooking my breakfast!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Nichole also known as Ablyss Gillespie. I am the former CEO of Autism Moms Are Beautiful and Editor-in-Chief of AMAB Magazine. I am the writer and creator of Autism Moms Rock (can be found on YouTube)… a beautiful song created to motivate Autism Moms on their journey! Now I am a private instructor (yoga) and I provide consultations to companies who work with Special Needs individuals. Raising a child on the autism spectrum motivate me to want to continue to help and assist others in the community!

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Becoming a mother to a beautiful young lady on the Autism Spectrum is what shaped me into who I am today. She is my best friend. She taught me me patience and understanding. Growing up so thought I knew what love and friendship was but I was so wrong about it all. After having her I knew and understood what genuine love meant! As I continue on my journey … I am thankful for all the lessons and blessings!

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
As an Autism Mom…. There was a time I kept telling myself I cannot do this. My daughter was diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, behaviors and IDD. The beginning time with her in elementary was the hardest. No sleep, no time for myself and I was only able to depend on my parents for love and support and even just a short break. Advocating for my daughter was so hard because many “educated” people on her team were failing her and I had to learn to build a loving community filled with support from other mothers and families who got it! With their assistance, prayers and support I was able to not give up!

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
This question is powerful! Everyone who uses God from their tongue to speak doesn’t mean they are actually sent by HIM!

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace at home when no one is there! I know that sounds kinda of selfish…. I realized with the last five years especially that so many people don’t mean you well but they also are dealing with their own troubles, fears and even demons! Being in my own space at one with myself is where I find my peace!
