An Inspired Chat with AE Thomas of The North side

AE Thomas shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

AE , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I believe one of the biggest challenges people face is fear. It has a way of stifling creativity and hindering productivity. Often, it’s the fear of not meeting others’ expectations or falling short of society’s definition of success that holds people back. I know from experience: there is no greater satisfaction than using your unique gifts to create something that resonates with others—something that helps them learn, grow, or simply relate.

However, it is scary—and in most cases, it demands a great deal of hard work and dedication. But the end result is absolutely worth it. You have to believe in that, and carry yourself in a way that reflects that belief. People will see it, and they’ll respond to it.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Andrea Davis. I am a singer/songwriter and author who has taken her personal relationship with God and put it to music and books. Born and raised in New York, I hail from a family of singers and musicians who have used their gifts and talents to lift the name of Jesus.

My love for God and my desire to serve Him are the inspiration for my lyrics and music. “He Will Answer” is my debut album. I wrote all the songs and collaborated with the dynamic duo production team, Beanz N Kornbread (AKA Kenneth Roy and Donald Johnson), on the music. “The songs I write are my testimony, and that God allows me to sing them is further evidence of His grace and mercy toward me.”

In addition to singing and songwriting, God has also gifted me to teach His Word through stories. My books are penned under the pseudonym, A E Thomas. Each book contains powerful messages grounded in biblical precepts and written so that “Everyman” can use them and grow thereby. Much like Jesus used parables to make biblical precepts “usable” so He has enabled me to write stories relevant to the times and to reiterate that although people change constantly; His Word never changes. My newest book is ”Rutted” and everyone who has read it, is enthralled! This topic has never been tackled in Christian fiction so its unlike anything you’ve ever read.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when I was around six years old and someone gave me a giant children’s Bible for Christmas. It was a hard covered tome filled with stories and big, colorful pictures. That was my favorite gift that year and I treasured it until it literally fell apart.

I was fascinated by the stories of miracles, healings, and the adventures of great men and women of faith. I knew that book was special and was destined to be a big part of my life though at such a young age I didn’t really understand the pull it had on me. I would line my dolls up and “teach” the Bible to them. I wanted to expound on those stories in a way that would make them easy to understand – I felt empowered to teach from that book!

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I almost gave up after writing my first book. I had convinced myself, that because this was part of my calling and destiny, that it would be a best seller right out of the gate. When that didn’t happen, I thought I had failed. Since then, I have spent a great deal of time in prayer and study and I realize that there were very few overnight successes in the Bible. Jesus Himself spent about 20 years in obscurity before his ministry really hit the scene.

The biggest lesson I have learned is that obedience to God’s Word is my first and most important calling. He said to write the book. He gave me the gifts, talent, and resources to get the job done (and five others since) and He is the one that will decide it’s rate of growth. There is nothing that brings me more joy and satisfaction that using my God given gifts to honor the gift-giver.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, and this is very important to me. My ‘brand” if you would, is Jesus Christ and to He has given me everything I need to live by the Word of God whether I am home alone or in the spotlight.

I don’t do this for money or fame. I do it because I want to help others by encouraging them in the things of God. I would not want to discourage anyone by being a hypocrite. My desire is that my light shines and gives light and hope to others.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
People misunderstand some the language (mainly cursing) and some the distasteful situations portrayed in my books. They do not understand how a “Christian” book can say and/or discuss such things. Well, how could God tell one of his holy prophets (Hosea) to marry a prostitute (Gomer)? Why does three quarters of the New Testament address sexual sin of some sort?

Everything goes back to the Bible. The Bible was written for humanity – to show humanity how to live upright before God. You cannot know what is right without defining what is wrong. There is nothing we encounter in this life that it does not speak to in some way, form, or fashion.

That said, many of the people you meet in my books have not had a life changing encounter with God…yet. So they have filthy ways, coarse language, etc. and you get to go on their journey to God with them as opposed to them being perfectly packaged from the onset.

This is important because God’s invitation to mankind is “come as you are.” If you decide to stay and start spending time with Him, He will help you work on fixing everything that needs to be fixed.
