joshua pitts shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
joshua , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think there’s a misunderstanding not about our business but our industry. Its changed over the last 15 years and its the customer thats changed. They want answers now, they want responses now and they want their jobs to start now. The goliaths in our industry dont oblige to this and they are losing market share. They are taking 2 weeks to return a customers proposal and they arent professional. This is why National LED has garnered so much success, we do it fast, we do it right and we deliver customers a professional experience they generally wont get else where.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I started National LED almost immediately out of college. I was an entrepreneur major but even before that i knew i wanted to work for myself and build something big. Timing was on my side and so was luck, when i graduated college Home DEpot started a major campaign educating customers on TV and billboards about what the LED bulb was. They were going after residential sales while i was knocking on car dealerships doors convincing them to switch their parking lot lights over to LEDs. The savings were huge and the ROI was a no brainer. Fast forward to today and National LED serves the largest auto dealers in the country along with being one of the most well respected names in the US for LED lighting. National LED is working towards building a hiring machine that on boards, trains and delivers sales professionals to the work place that make more money with us than they would any where else. i know i want to be well paid for my work so thats what i strive for with the people that work for me.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a caretaker. I knew i wanted to be someone my family could look up to and count on to provide. I bought my mom a house in my early thirties and that was rewarding. Im not a lavish spender but i am conscious with my money and my investments to make sure those around me can be taken care of. Specifically the employees of my company and my family.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Being in business for yourself can be a roller coaster. I remember closing the biggest deal of my career in my early 20s and it being so much stress. I had a competitor write a negative review on my google review page and that hurt. i had worked really hard to win the deal i am speaking of and the compeitior felt that revenge was best served by giving me a 1 star review and writing a fake and bad review. Luckily google took the review down but ill never forget how it made me feel.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
The smart people in our industry are the ones who have been around for a long time and have captured alot of business in the marketplace. I dont think they see a reason to change when the market dynamic has changed so much. Technology needs to be incorporated, Sales persons need to be trained differently and the customer has expectations they want met quickly or else they will revolt. i dont think the past winners in the led industry understand that as much as national led does and its quickly gaining national led alot of market share.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Losing so much sleep at night. i think i worried alot in the past and was so afraid to make a mistake. mistakes happen and customers just want you to admit them and fix them. when you do youre forgiven, thats something that has taken me years to understand.
