An Inspired Chat with Rick Blaze & Bishop Black of Northside

We recently had the chance to connect with Rick Blaze & Bishop Black and have shared our conversation below.

Rick & Bishop, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day looks like Prayer, preparation and prosperity. Waking up every morning to achieve greatness

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
The most Iconic and Accomplished Duo in Houston Hip Hop History. Two kid’s from the 5th Ward where legends have long paved the way in Politics, Music, Sports, Education, Culinary excellence etc. Blaze X Black have been exceptions to the usual stereotypes of inner city youth.

Parents and siblings all with degrees or Collegiate experience. Rick Blaze found his niche playing piano in the Church. Then later production and song writing while at Sam Houston State (Which he graduated)
While Bishop found his voice in Public Speaking, Poetry in Elementary. Bishop then crafted his songwriting skill while attending Texas Southern University ..Getting an associates in Early Childhood Education.

The duo formed after reconnecting over 2 decades later creating Blaze X Black.
Though it sounds like a Super Hero group , it’s their names put together. You couldn’t tell with their SuperPowers on Display with this new Album “NAHIMSAYIN”.
This project can only be found on the Band website blazeandblack.com.
This is betting on yourself as the band lives by the “Trust Your Dopeness ” !!!

NAHIMSAYIN should be considered as one of the top 20 Houston Hip Hop Albums ever in Houston!
Standout tracks like Alright, Joel Osteen, Chrome Hearts Walk it like a Dog and We Try lead the way.
The whole project is well put together propelling Rick Blaze into the talks of a Pharell, Teddy Riley and even Quincy Jones esque revered status of the South.
He produced every track and arranged most vocals especially on full display with the Spirit Osmosis “Jesus Piece “!!!

This is definitely in the Talks of “Album of The Year ” as the group Proclaims.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
5th grade. I used to paint with pastels. A lady came up to my school and said she had seen some of my work (I don’t know how) and wanted to purchase to hang it up inside her bbq restaurant. As a kid, being offered money from an adult to purchase one of my paintings was a powerful moment for me. -Rick Blaze

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Everything you’re thinking about is correct! Just go do it!!!! -Rick Blaze

You’re weird and that’s okay, you’re daddy is weird too lol!!!! -BVB

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Most definitely!! That’s why we’ve been consistently able to do good business!! – Blaze X Black

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
People won’t see the work and sacrifices, Wins are usually what matters. The work to get here has been most rewarding for us. We magnified something God and our Parents saw in us long before we could comprehend-BVB
