An Inspired Chat with Ro’sean Langhum of Upper Kirby/River Oaks

We recently had the chance to connect with Ro’sean Langhum and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Ro’sean, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
BUSY! Like REALLY busy lol. I have recently stepped into the restaurant space and have been spending a lot of time understanding the business and looking for an executive chef and staff. It makes sense that I have done this at this point in my career because I feel like music and the culinary arts go hand in hand for sure. It’s going to be so wonderful being able to tell musical and culinary stories under the same roof!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
MUSIC. FOOD. EDUCATION. These disciplines define my life and are at the core of my being. As a creator I find sublime joy in making positive connections that may lead to long relationships within the music, culinary and educational space. It’s been very hard understanding my “why” which I feel is directly connected to my purpose on this planet. I am from the great state of Texas by way of Houston and I love it!

Looking forward to the years to come, I anticipate helping musicians create music that really speaks to their story through live studio sessions, tv and film music, original score and everything in between. It is important to me to create and complete projects that have meaningful value and that will allow others to join along in the process as those said project develop and grow. People are unique, special and if we take the time to listen and collaborate we can see that we are too.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Early in my career I spent tons of time in the world of comparison. Looking up to those who did what I wanted to do during those formidable years and just out right compared and even completely changing my musical voice to emulate their sounds and vibes. They say that imitation is the best form of flattery but I’d like to say that when we become copy machines we loose the gift of being ourselves and the uniqueness of our undiscovered voice. So for me, no more senseless comparisons and departures from what I feel is coming from the most inner parts of my soul. God didn’t create you or me to be copies. It’s ok to be influenced but a copy isn’t the vibe.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Wow. What a question. Suffering taught me that I was capable and equipped and also possessed the grit it takes to be in the music business. My times of lowliness taught me that my faith in God was real and was firm. The dark times also provided perspective and the knowledge that led to the wisdom I now operate from currently. I’m so much more sure of my gifting, abilities, intellectual property and mindset. Most of all, I’m comfortable in my own skin and style. Hey. I’m not for everyone and I’ve learned to enjoy saying no and connecting with those I resonate with for real.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Kinda. Lol. The public version of me is more patient and less jerky haha. Privately I expect the best out of grown people and expect integrity in business and communication. Not real sure as to how that’s working out for me, but hey I will keep the bar high so people will have to perform appropriately when dealing with me and my business. For the most part, what you see is what you get when you see me and when you “see” me.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m at home on the sofa watching a cool documentary or car info video on YouTube with a glass of wine, red or white, and yummy salty snack and scrolling on my phone while simultaneously not watching the cool stuff on my tv lol. Rest. That’s the real answer. When I’m able to kick back without a deadline in sight.
