An Inspired Chat with SURFACE GREY

We’re looking forward to introducing you to SURFACE GREY. Check out our conversation below.

SURFACE , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Right now I’ll probably wake up shower brush my teeth etc. then I’m instantly getting to work on some music like currently I’m wrapping up my new project, “Magnum Opus: Trinity.” I’m like 75% done, so I pretty much am listening to last set of mixes and doing any last second post production to make sure the project is polished! Other part of the day probably eating chilling maybe watching some sports like WNBA, UFC, or Boxing while waiting for football to come back this fall lol

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am SURFACE GREY and if you didn’t know my name is a play on the term,
“gray area.” I rap, sing, produce, write, and even DJ a lil bit which makes me feel as if I’m the “gray area” of music meaning I’m involved in all facets not just one. In math the term “surface” means the same as “area”. Many people don’t even know that’s how I got my name they think it’s because my favorite color is grey (which isn’t lol hence why my last project was called, “Da Green Tape.”

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
It’s funny before this I was a football player. A damn good football player too at that (if you ask me *shrugs while laughing*) I literally played football at college on scholarship too, but eventually like they say you gotta face the music. I definitely faced the music and realized the world was telling me I had to be an artist. Well that, and I never grew to be tall as those dudes you see on Sundays lol

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would say to SAVE YOUR REFUND CHECKS! Had I took that money put in a bank account, let it gain interest, and sit a bit??? Oweeee I’d probably have my own label started and going right now tbh. Instead I was blowing money on shoes every week from SNKRS app! Message to any fellow musicians in college getting that check; PLEASE SAVE IT!

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
I think smart people of today are getting it wrong overthinking everything. For example, you don’t need a robot working a damn popcorn machine (sorry just seen that video of Elon saying it’s the future). Its core experiences for that teenager to work that movie job making a crappy 8.50 near minimum wage salary just to show hard work ethic because once they get that first check fully earned from their own hands and hard work not mom and pops, it’s priceless. We losing recipes sadly smh

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
I’m starting to now open up portfolios trying to find a great investment to startup. I always said by 30s I wanna have things to where besides me being in the studio and making the art, my money needs to be working for me. I know that investment might have to take some time to really get to where I’d want it to be. That’s my real deal realistic goal but on the front side I expect my music to be popping off I’m headlining festivals making some nice money from music! Living my best life and just able to have financial freedom through the art.
